Ten speed skating competitions were held at the XIX Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 . The venue was the Utah Olympic Oval , which opened in 2001 .

The record hunt at the Olympic Games heralded with the folding ice skate had also been taken into account during the construction of this runway and, in addition to the expected world records, caused several falls. There were two new world records: The Dutchman Jochem Uytdehaage broke the 13-minute sound barrier over 10,000 meters . The German Claudia Pechstein reached a new record over 5 kilometers.
