Cynthia "Cindy" Nicole Klassen , OM (born August 12, 1979 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian speed skater .

Cindy Klassen comes from a Russian Mennonite family who immigrated to Manitoba from the Ukraine (then southern Russia). She attended the Maple Leaf School in North Kildonan (Winnipeg) and graduated from the Mennonite Brethern Collegiate in Elmwood (also in Winnipeg). Klassen feels committed to their Christian values ​​and traditions and occasionally confesses them publicly. She began her athletic development in her early childhood. She starts for the WSSC club from Winnipeg.

Klassen began her sporting career as an ice hockey player , in her youth she played for the Canadian junior national team. When she was not nominated for the 1998 Olympics, she switched to speed skating, where she quickly demonstrated her talent . She won the bronze medal over 3000 meters at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . In 2005 she became world champion in both 1500 and 3000 meters. At the 20th Olympic Winter Games in Turin in 2006 , she won the gold medal over 1500 meters and a silver medal over 1000 meters and in the team pursuit as well as bronze over 3000 meters and the 5000 meters.

At the all-around world championships on 18./19. March 2006 took place in Calgary , Canada , Klassen won the gold medal in the Olympic Oval there (victory on all four competition courses) by a large margin ahead of Claudia Pechstein and the Canadian Kristina Groves . This was her second all-around world title after she won the World Cup in 2003. Klassen holds the world record over 1500 and 3000 meters. In their home town of Winnipeg, Klassen is referred to as Winnipegwonder .

At the Olympic Games, Klassen was honored with a 25-cent Canadian special coin.
