Bergsma began her career as an inline speed skater . Between 2004 and 2006 she won five world titles at the junior world championships . In 2007 she was able to win another two world championship titles with the relay in Cali, Colombia .
In 2006 Bergsma successfully made the switch from inline speed skating to speed skating . In the Speed Skating World Cup , she made her debut at the beginning of the 2007/08 season in Salt Lake City and took tenth place over 1000 m in Division B. At the Sprint World Championships 2008 in Heerenveen , she came in 25th place in the sprint all-around. The following year she won at the Sprint World Championship 2009 in Moscow the 20th place in the sprint-around competition and the Single Distance World Championships 2009 in Richmond m the 16th Place about 2 x 500 m and the 15th place on the 1000th In the 2009/10 season she reached her first World Cup podiums with third place over 500 m at the World Cup in Erfurt . At her first Olympic participation in 2010 in Vancouver she came in 16th place over 1500 m, ninth place over 1000 m and sixth place over 500 m. At the beginning of the following season, she took three second places over 1000 m in the World Cup. At the World Cup in Obihiro , she won her first two World Cup victories over 1000 m. In Moscow she reached two third places over 500 m and a third place over 1000 m. At the Sprint World Championship 2011 in Heerenveen she was fourth. She won bronze at the individual distance world championships in 2011 in Inzell over 1000 m. She finished the season in fourth place in the overall world cup over 500 m and first place in the overall world cup over 1000 m.
In the 2011/12 season Bergsma came third over 500 m three times. Over 1000 m she took second place twice and once first place and achieved second place in the overall World Cup over 1000 m. In January 2012, she was sixth at the World Sprint Championships in Calgary . At the individual distance world championships in Heerenveen in 2012 , she achieved eighth place in the team pursuit and fourth place over 1000 m and over 2 × 500 m. At the beginning of the following season she won the 1000 m World Cup in Heerenveen. Over 500 m, she took second place twice there. In the further course of the season, she won three races over 1000 m and took second place once. Over 500 m she came second twice and third once. In January 2013 she became world champion in the sprint four-way fight at the Sprint World Championships in Salt Lake City . At the individual distance world championships in Sochi in 2013 , she achieved eighth place over 2 × 500 m and sixth place over 1000 m. She finished the season in fifth place in the overall world cup over 500 m and first place in the overall world cup over 1000 m. In the 2013/14 season she made it onto the podium 13 times in the World Cup. She won four times over 1000 m and twice over 500 m. In January 2014 she won the bronze medal in sprint all- around at the Sprint World Championships in Nagano . At the highlight of the season, the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, seventh place over 1000 m and over 1500 m was her best result. At the end of the season she reached second place in the overall world cup over 500 m and, as in the previous year, first place in the overall world cup over 1000 m.
In the following season Bergsma came second four times at the World Cup in Berlin . At the following World Cup in Heerenveen , she won over 500 m, over 1000 m and over 1500 m. Another five World Cup victories and two second places followed in the season. In February 2015 she won bronze over 1500 m, silver over 1000 m and gold over 500 m at the individual distance world championships in Heerenveen. The following month she won silver in the sprint all- around at the Sprint World Championships in Astana . At the all around world championship in 2015 in Calgary she was fourth. The season ended for her in fifth place in the overall World Cup over 1000 m, third in the overall World Cup over 500 m, second place in the overall World Cup over 1500 m and first place in the Grand World Cup. At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, she finished second over 1500 m and first place over 1000 m at the World Cup in Calgary over 500 m. She set over 1000 m with 1: 12.51 min. set a new world record. This was followed by two victories over 1500 m, five third and eight second places. She won the World Cup over 500 m and took second place in the overall World Cup, in the World Cup over 1000 m and in the World Cup over 1500 m. At the individual distance world championships in 2016 in Kolomna she won the silver medal in the 1000 m and 1500 m and the silver medal at the sprint world championships in Seoul in 2016 . In the 2016/17 season she won five times over 1000 m and four times over 1500 m. In addition, she took second place once and third place twice, winning the overall World Cup, the 1000 m World Cup and the 1500 m World Cup. At the 2017 World Individual Distance Championships in Gangwon , she won the bronze medal in the mass start and the gold medal in the 1000 m and 1500 m. At the end of February 2017, she finished second at the Sprint World Championships in Calgary. In the following season she won the World Cup in Calgary over 1000 m and ran in Stavanger on the third place over 1000 m and on the second place over 1500 m. At the season highlight, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she won the bronze medal in the team pursuit.
