500 m specialist Jenny Wolf with a surprise victory

The sprint world championship covers the 500 and 1,000 m distance, each on two days. If an athlete starts on the inside track on the first day, he starts on the outside track on the second day.

  • The following example shows how the all-around points of the individual runs can be calculated
route elapsed time 500 m average
500 m (1st day) 37.64 s 37.64 / 1 0= 037.640 points

1,000 m (2nd day) 1: 17.09 min = 77.09 s 77.09 / 2 0= 038.545 points
Total: 152.315 points

Women

The Chinese Wang Beixing was unlucky at this World Cup. Her skates were lost on the way to Heerenveen. A replacement organized at short notice could only serve as a replacement and was not convincing due to a lack of fit. Wang started with the temporarily laced and glued shoes. After a shaky 500 and 1,000 m, with correspondingly bad times, she broke off the competition and started the journey home. The German Jenny Wolf started the race with expected best times over 500 m. As a short-distance sprinter, however, she had to approach the 1,000 m very carefully. Despite places 6 and 7 over 1,000 m, it paid off in the end. She won with a 0.845 point lead in second place. Weakened by an illness, the favorite Anni Friesinger could not prevail in the sprint. In her favorite discipline, the 1,000 m, she ran after her best performance and could not match the times over 500 m given by Jenny Wolf.

Men

The Dutchman Jan Bos (sprint world champion 1998) was the fastest man over 1,000 m on the first day. It became apparent that he would win another medal. A fall in the 500 m run on the second day broke this dream.
