The 41st World Speed Skating Sprint Championship was held on January 16 and 17, 2010 in Obihiro, Japan, in the Meiji Hokkaido-Tokachi Oval . The ice rink was already the venue for the 1990 junior speed skating championships . Due to personal preparations for the Olympic Games, the defending champions Shani Davis and Wang Beixing , as well as many other world class runners , were not at the start this year.

The men's and women's winners this year both came from South Korea . The last time both winners came from the same country was in 2004 when the Dutch heirs Wennemars and Marianne Timmer were victorious. Lee Sang-hwa won her first world title and the first ever gold medal for a South Korean woman at sprint world championships. Lee Kyu-hyeok , on the other hand, won his third title at a Sprint World Cup after 2007 and 2008 .
