The 42nd speed skating sprint world championship was held on January 22nd and 23rd, 2011 in Heerenveen in Thialf , the Netherlands . Heerenveen hosted the Sprint World Championship for the sixth time.

In the women's field, defending champion Lee Sang-hwa from South Korea had to cancel her start at short notice due to an injury. Here, Christine Nesbitt from Canada won for the first time with solid 500 m races and 1,000 m races, respectively, ahead of the two local heroes Annette Gerritsen and Margot Boer . On the first day, Nesbitt set a new track record over 1,000 m in 1: 15.01 minutes.

In the men's race, Lee Kyu-hyeok from South Korea was able to successfully defend his title. He laid the foundation for victory with two clear victories over the 500 m distance. Stefan Groothuis , who, to the delight of the audience, was still at the top of the overall ranking after the first day, fell back to fourth place on the second day.

The DESG nominated by Judith Hesse , Gabi Hirschbichler , Denny Ihle , Nico Ihle , Samuel Black and Jenny Wolf six athletes for the World Cup. While Jenny Wolf was aiming for her fourth place in a row, this year the German men were also hoping for top places after the upward trend in the World Cup .

Jenny Wolf as the best German runner won both 500m races and was on three of the four runs on points at No. 2. affected by muscular symptoms, she reached after a weak last 1,000 meter race only the space 8. Nico Ihle made up for more than ten Years for the first time the hoped-for placement among the top ten runners for a German sprinter.

competition

In the sprint world championship, four routes are run, twice each over a distance of 500 m and 1,000 m, two routes each on both days. If an athlete starts on the inside track over a distance on the first day, he starts on the outside track on the second day or vice versa. Only the 24 best women and men after three courses qualify for the fourth course.

The times achieved are converted into points. Over 500 m the elapsed time corresponds to the number of points, over 1,000 m results in the elapsed time in seconds divided by 2 the number of points. The athlete with the lowest total number of points after four routes wins the Sprint World Championship.
