The 43rd World Speed Skating Sprint Championship was held on January 28 and 29, 2012 in Calgary, Canada in the Olympic Oval . Calgary hosted the Sprint World Championship for the fourth time.

In the women’s category, Yu Jing from China won for the first time, ahead of local hero Christine Nesbitt and her compatriot Zhang Hong .

In the men's category, Stefan Groothuis from the Netherlands won. Korean defending champion Lee Kyou-hyuk won silver ahead of teammate Mo Tae-bum .

competition

In the sprint world championship, four routes are run, twice each over a distance of 500 m and 1,000 m, two routes each on both days. If an athlete starts on the inside track over a distance on the first day, he starts on the outside track on the second day or vice versa. Only the 24 best women and men after three courses qualify for the fourth course.

The times achieved are converted into points. Over 500 m the elapsed time corresponds to the number of points, over 1,000 m results in the elapsed time in seconds divided by 2 the number of points. The athlete with the lowest total number of points after four routes wins the Sprint World Championship.
