The Olympic Oval is an ice rink on the University of Calgary campus in Calgary , Alberta , Canada that opened for the 1988 Winter Olympics . Today the arena is home to the Calgary Oval X-Treme from the Western Women's Hockey League .
history
Construction on the oval began in 1985, nearly four years after Calgary won the bid to host the 1988 Winter Olympics . Similar to the Olympic Saddledome , most of the building was made of prefabricated prestressed concrete. 28 outside beams support the building facade, the arched roof structure is supported by 84 beams. The stadium was completed towards the end of the summer of 1987, the official opening took place in September, five months before the opening of the games.
The Olympic Oval was the first indoor speed skating stadium in North America and also the first hall to be used for the speed skating competitions at the Winter Olympics. The roof allows precise climate regulation, so that, also due to the altitude of Calgary, three Olympic (1,500 and 5,000 meters for men and 1,500 meters for women) and seven new world records (500, 1,500 and 10,000 meters for men and 500 , 1,000, 3,000 and 5,000 meters for women) and the arena was given the nickname “The fastest ice in the world” (Eng. “The fastest ice in the world”).
In the following 14 years, more records were set in the Olympic Oval, until a large number of these best performances were finally broken at the 2002 Winter Olympics in the Utah Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City , which has more modern ice technology and an even more favorable altitude.
In addition to the 400-meter speed skating rink, the stadium also has two international ice hockey rinks, which can also be used for short tracks, as well as a 450-meter-long running track, an eight-lane, 110-meter-long sprint track and various training facilities.
The stadium has also been the home of the Calgary Oval X-Treme , a former team of the National Women's Hockey League and later participant of the Western Women's Hockey League , since 1995 . In addition, the University of Calgary women's ice hockey team plays its home games in the arena. During the competition and training-free time, the oval is open to the public.
