The Canmore Nordic Center is a training and competition facility for biathlon and cross-country skiing in Canada .

The Canmore Nordic Center is located in the Canmore Nordic Center Provincial Park near the city of Canmore in the Canadian state of Alberta . It is located at the foot of Mount Rundle in the Canadian Rockies in the Bow River Valley . The stadium is at 604  m , the highest point of the trails is at 640  m , the lowest at 601  m .

Furnishing

The stadium has an A license , which is required to hold biathlon world cups and world championships. In addition to the main and functional buildings, there are 24 permanent ski wax cabins , the capacity of which can be further increased by setting up containers during major international competitions. The cabins are located in the immediate vicinity of the cross-country ski trails, the shooting range and the test area for ski technicians. The shooting range with 30 shooting lanes is equipped with the mechanical curve system and also has a lighting system.

Trails

The stadium has up to 60 km of prepared trails, some of which are also equipped with floodlights . The routes all have their own name and are z. B. by animals (" Coyote ", " Lynx ", " Gray Wolf ", " Chipmunk ", " Cougar ", " Osprey ", " Snowshoe Hare ", " Flying Sqirrel " or " Wolverine "), according to locations of other Olympic Winter Games (" Sarajevo ", " Salt Lake ", " Lillehammer ", " Nagano " or " Albertville ") or named after places in the vicinity ("Canmore", " Banff ", " Georgetown " or "Meadowview"). Some of the trails are paved so that they can also be used for training with roller skis during the summer months .

building

The maintenance building houses the vehicles for the cross-country ski run preparation and two machines for the production of artificial snow . The Day Lodge houses a media and press center with a total of 290 m², areas for volunteers with a further 140 m² as well as a lost and found and information office and a hospital ward. The Bill Warren Training Center houses the Family Club for visitors, common areas for athletes with free internet access, the offices for accreditation and logistics, rooms for the IBU and the Organizing Committee, doping control and a medical area. Directly at the shooting range is the biathlon stadium, which, in addition to a grandstand in the biathlon building, houses the offices of the race director, timekeeping and the jury as well as the competition office. Outside the biathlon building are the booths for the stadium announcer and the television commentators.

In March 2017 the Meadow Hut was renamed Chandra Crawford Hut . Chandra Crawford is from Canmore and won gold in the cross-country sprint at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics . She is the older sister of biathlete Rosanna Crawford .

renovation

Extensive construction and renovation work was carried out at the Canmore Nordic Center between 2005 and 2006. The main objective was to adapt the facility built for the 1988 Olympic Games to the current requirements of a modern training and competition center. In the course of this, the shooting range was completely renewed and improved, the cross-country ski trails expanded, new team buildings erected, the asphalt roller-skis course expanded and the facilities for the production of artificial snow expanded.

Events

biathlon

The first biathlon world cup took place in the 1986/87 season between February 18 and 22. At that time, a men's individual, sprint and relay race were held. In early 1988, the Canmore Olympic Winter Games biathlon competitions were held. World Cups followed in January 1991, March 1994, February 2016 and 2019. Due to the persistently low temperatures, a shortened individual competition was held for the first time in February 2019 .

Biathlon World Championships were also held in Canmore in March 1994 , but only in non-Olympic team competitions because of the 1994 Winter Olympics taking place in the same year .

Canmore has also hosted races for the IBU Cup , most recently in February and March 2015.

In 1994 and 2009 , the Canmore Nordic Center hosted the Junior Biathlon World Championships .

Cross-country skiing

In addition to biathlon, the cross-country skiing competitions of the 1988 Winter Olympics were held at the Canmore Nordic Center. Even cross-country skiing World Cup were held there, most recently in the season 2015/16 .

Nordic combination

The Nordic Combined cross-country skiing competitions were also held at the Canmore Nordic Center during the 1988 Winter Olympics . The jumping took place in Canada Olympic Park .

Training center

The Canmore Nordic Center serves as a year-round training center for the Canadian biathlon team, the youngsters and local sports clubs. The trails can also be used by recreational athletes and tourists.
