The 43rd Biathlon World Championships took place from February 13-22, 2009 in Pyeongchang , South Korea . The dress rehearsal for the Biathlon World Championships 2009 took place from February 27th to March 2nd, 2008 on the competition area under construction. Two sprint and two pursuit races as well as a mixed relay were held.

After the city lost the vote to host the Biathlon World Championships in 2008 against the Swedish Östersund with 11:30 votes, it prevailed as the host of the Biathlon World Championships 2009 with 23:22 votes against the Russian Khanty-Mansiysk . Pyeongchang aligned with the ski stadium Alpensia the 2018 Winter Olympics from.

The Youth and Junior World Championships were held from January 28 to February 3 in the Canadian Canmore instead.

In the following year, 2010, the Olympic Winter Games were the regular highlight of the season . Therefore, in 2010 only the non-Olympic mixed relay was held as a world championship.

Some runners, including Ole Einar Bjørndalen , Lars Berger and Michael Rösch , were given a one-minute time penalty for leaving the competition course. The nations concerned protested against this decision. The protest was accepted and the original order was restored.

doping

One day before the start of the world championships, the members of the Russian contingent and reigning world and vice world champions Jekaterina Jurjewa , Albina Achatowa and Dmitri Jaroshenko were convicted of doping after the opening of the B sample from the World Cup in Östersund in December; immediately afterwards they left South Korea for Moscow.
