The 5th Biathlon World Championships for women took place from February 29 to March 6, 1988 in Chamonix , France . Because of the Olympic Winter Games held in the same year, no world championship fights were held for men. The last time there were separate world championships for women from men, since 1989 the world championships for men and women have been held together.
After German athletes competed for the first time last year, Petra Schaaf won the gold medal in the sprint, the first ever medal for the Federal Republic of Germany in women's biathlon. For the first time neither of the two gold medals in the sprint or individual race went to the Soviet Union, which, however, remained unbeaten in the relay competition for the fifth time.
