The main part of the 40th Biathlon World Championships took place from March 4th to 13th, 2005 in the cross-country skiing and biathlon center in Hochfilzen / Pillerseetal in Austria . In addition, there was a mixed relay for the first time, which was classified as a world championship. The race was held as part of the last World Cup of the season on March 13, 2005 in Khanty-Mansiysk , Russia . The rules were not as standardized as they were later. Two teams per nation could start and 4 × 6 km were run.
In the following year, 2006, the Olympic Winter Games were the regular highlight of the season . Therefore, in 2006 only the not yet Olympic mixed relay was held as a world championship.
