The 50th  Biathlon World Championships took place between 6 and 17 March 2019 the Swedish Ostersund instead.

The competitions were again held as part of the World Cup , and the results of the championships were therefore also included in the World Cup rankings. For the first time since 2013, all disciplines of the World Cup are also part of the World Championships, as the single-mixed relay has been included in the competition program. Unlike in the World Cup and IBU Cup, it does not take place on the same day as the mixed relay.

In 2018, no biathlon world championships were held because of the Olympic Winter Games .

Election result

Against competitors from Italy , the Czech Republic and Russia , Östersund secured the bid to host the world championships on September 7, 2014 in St. Wolfgang, Austria . After 1970 and 2008 , the title fights will be held for the third time in the Swedish town.

Ostersund
Location in Sweden

Östersund is located on Storsjön , Sweden's fifth largest lake, and is the capital of the municipality of the same name and the capital of the Jämtland County .

The competitions took place in the Östersunds skidstadion . The first races of the biathlon world cup are usually held here in December , and Östersund was also the host of the biathlon world championships in 1970 and 2008 .

The opening ceremony and medal awarding took place at 8:19 p.m. on Östersund's town hall square, the medal awarding on the last day of the competition and the final event were held directly in the stadium.

Attendees

Some of the reigning world champions and medalists from the 2017 World Cup and the 2018 Olympic Games did not take part in the 2019 World Championships.

The gold medalists Lowell Bailey , Anton Schipulin , Nadseja Skardsina , Darja Domratschawa and Marie Dorin-Habert had already ended their careers.

Other athletes such as the Germans Maren Hammerschmidt and Simon Schempp as well as the Czech Gabriela Koukalová were not active at the time of the title fights due to illness or injuries or could not qualify for the title fights.

Other medalists who ended their careers or who did not take part in the World Championships for other reasons included Emil Hegle Svendsen , Ole Einar Bjørndalen , Daniel Mesotitsch and Jean-Guillaume Béatrix .

Starting odds

The allocation of the starting quotas for the World Championships is based on the regulation of the starting quotas for the 2018/19 World Cup , but there is a different distribution of the quota places. The best 15 nations in the Nations Cup ranking of last winter will receive four starting places, the nations in ranks 16 to 25 three and the nations in ranks 26 to 30 two places. In addition, the IBU gives up to ten wild cards to nations without a quota, but only a maximum of two wild cards per nation.

Since the starting quotas are based on the Nations Cup points of the previous year, there can be different quotas for the women's and men's teams for one nation.

The rule change introduced for the 2017 World Cup also applies to the 2019 title fights, in this particular case the basis for the allocation of additional starting places is winning the gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea . The gold medalist of the sprint Arnd Peiffer and the winner of the pursuit competition Martin Fourcade receive personal starting rights for the sprint race in Östersund, Germany and France are allowed to use their four quota places in addition to these two athletes. In the women's race, Laura Dahlmeier won both the sprint and the pursuit, in this case Germany can send Dahlmeier and four other athletes into the sprint. The gold medal winners of the individual and mass start races also receive personal starting rights for the respective competition at the World Championships.

The Austrian biathlete Lisa Hauser shot at the targets of shooting range 30 in a standing position, although she was standing on shooting range 29. Crossfire is a rule violation in biathlon, although Hauser hit all the targets - but the wrong ones - she had to run five penalties because all targets of her shooting range were not hit and thus also missed the qualification for the pursuit. Without this mistake, Hauser would have been in the top 10 position.
