Walentyna (Valya) Olexandriwna Semerenko ( Ukrainian Валентина (Валя) Олександрівна Семеренко , scientific. Transliteration Valentyna (Valja) Oleksandrivna Semerenko * 18 January 1986 in Krasnopillja , Sumy , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Ukrainian biathlete . In start lists she is usually named Valj Semerenko .

Career

Walentyna Semerenko is a sports teacher who, like her twin sister Wita Semerenko , who is also active in the World Cup, has been involved in biathlon since 2003 . The athlete , who started for Dynamo Sumy and trained by Hryhorij Shamraj, has been part of the Ukrainian national team since 2005 . She made her debut in the biathlon world cup in 2005 in a sprint (47th) in Osrblie . At the 2006 World Cup in Hochfilzen , she was able to place herself in the top ten (7th) in the individual race for the first time and thus in the top ten. At the 2006 Olympic Games she was used in singles (47th). In the 2008 World Championship in Sweden Ostersund she won silver medal in the relay. At the 2009 World Cup in Oberhof , she achieved the first World Cup victory of her career with the relay.

Semerenko took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Her best result was 13th place in the individual. With the relay she finished sixth. At the 2013 World Championships in Nové Město , she won the bronze medal in the individual competition and also won silver with the Ukrainian relay. At the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi , she won the gold medal with the relay. Since 2015 she has been the most successful participant in European championships with six titles and ten medals won. In the gender-adjusted leaderboard, it is in third place. At the 2015 World Championships , she secured the bronze medal after just one mistake in the sprint. In the mass start she stayed clear and won the gold medal.

Semerenko is also successful in summer biathlon. In 2007 she became double world champion in sprint and pursuit.
