The 41st Biathlon World Championships took place from February 2 to 11, 2007 in Antholz in South Tyrol ( Italy ), which was the fifth time after 1975, 1976, 1983 and 1995. Antholz had clearly prevailed at the Congress of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) in 2002 with 27 votes against the Swedish Östersund (five votes), the French Haute-Maurienne (four votes) and the Russian Khanty-Mansiysk (three votes).
According to a decision of the IBU on February 17, 2006, the mixed relay was part of the competition program for the first time in the title fights, so that for the first time there were 11 decisions at a World Cup. This competition had previously been held twice in 2005 and 2006, each as an independent Mixed Relay World Championship. The rules were adapted again and brought into the form that was valid from then on. Only one relay was allowed to start per nation, the order again looked like this that initially two biathletes ran over 6 km each and then two male starters over 7.5 km each.
In 2006 there had only been the world championships in the non-Olympic mixed relay because of the Olympic Winter Games in Turin .
Balance sheet
The most successful nation with five gold, three silver and three bronze medals was Germany , which dominated the women especially by winning four of the five possible world titles and a total of seven medals. In contrast, Austria, Italy and Switzerland could not win any medals.
The surprising star of the Biathlon World Cup was not only for women, the German starter Magdalena Neuner , who won a total of three gold medals. Neuner's teammate Andrea Henkel shone after a moderate start with two golds on the two final days. Martina Glagow , Anna Carin Olofsson and Linda Grubben , who ended her career with immediate effect after the last decision, were each able to look forward to a complete set of medals, as well as Kati Wilhelm (one gold, one bronze) and Florence Baverel-Robert ( three times silver) successful several times. The days of the competition were disappointing for the Russian women who had been spoiled for success in recent years, of whom only Natalja Gusewa could travel home with precious metal in her luggage.
In the men's race, the dominant athlete of the season, Ole Einar Bjørndalen , was the most successful participant, as expected, with two golds and one silver. By winning complete sets of medals, his fiercest opponents, the German Michael Greis and the French old master Raphaël Poirée at his last world championships, were also able to showcase themselves brilliantly throughout the season . One gold and one silver each went to the Russian Maxim Tschudow . The biggest surprises here were Michal Šlesingr from the Czech Republic, with one silver and one bronze, and the German Andreas Birnbacher , who was runner-up in the mass start world championship.

mascot
The official mascot of the Biathlon World Cup 2007 was the brown bear "Bumsi". The name was supposed to imitate the sound of the firing of biathlon rifles ("bum-bum-bum") onomatopoeically, but this naming was very controversial both among PR experts and women's rights activists . The latter were bothered by the sexual innuendo and involuntary associations that the name arouses in many. Marketing experts criticized the fact that there was no “bum” sound at the shooting range, but “bang”. In Germany's public media world, the mascot was casually referred to as a problem bear, based on the brown bear " Bruno ", who was shot in the Alps in 2006 after weeks of excitement .
