Jay William Hakkinen (born July 19, 1977 in Kasilof , Alaska ) is a retired American biathlete .

Career

Jay Hakkinen started for the US national biathlon team from 1997 to 2014 and was trained by the two Swedes Mikael Löfgren and Per Nilsson .

His club is WSV Oberhof 05 in Germany. Hakkinen achieved his best placement in a World Cup race in 1999 at his home competition in Lake Placid, where he finished 5th. Overall, Hakkinen came in five top 10 placings in world cup races, the best result in a major event is 10th place at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in individual.

In the overall World Cup, the 33rd place from the 2004/2005 season was Hakkinen's best result.

At the relay race of the 2006 Winter Olympics , Hakkinen showed that he belongs to the extended world elite by handing over to his team-mate Tim Burke as the starting runner for the US team while in the lead . In the end, the USA finished 9th in the relay race, which was the best result the Americans had in international championships since 1972. Jay Hakkinen also competed in the 2010 Winter Olympics. His best result was 54th place in the sprint. With the relay he finished 13th.
