The 34th Biathlon World Championships were scheduled to take place from February 5 to 14, 1999 in Kontiolahti, Finland, in the local biathlon stadium .

There were two changes in the competition program: For the first time world champions were determined in the mass start, but the team competition was no longer part of the program.

Because of the persistent extreme cold and temperatures down to −25 ° C, the sprint races planned as the opening race had to be postponed a total of six times and finally took place on February 12, 1999 . The pursuit and relay races could still be held in Kontiolahti on the following two days .

The single and mass start races were canceled and on 11 and 13. March 1999 as part of the World Cup finals in Norway Oslo ( Holmenkollen discharged).

In 1998, because of the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, there were only the world championships in the non-Olympic disciplines of pursuit and team competition.
