Gundars Upenieks (born March 31, 1971 in Madona ) is a particularly active Latvian biathlete in the 1990s , who took part in four Olympic Winter Games and seven Biathlon World Championships .

Gundars Upenieks is married and lives in Madona and Riga . The policeman started for CPSK Olympic . His first start at a major event was during the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville . In the sprint the Latvian was 44th, in the pursuit 35th and together with Oļegs Maļuhins , Aivars Bogdanovs and Ilmārs Bricis as the final runner in the relay competition 16. In the following year Upenieks first appeared in a world championship in Borowez and ran with the relay on the 18th place. For the first time in the World Cup points he ran as 19th of the individual at the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer . In addition, he was 16th again with the relay in the same line-up as two years earlier. The 1995 World Cup in Antholz brought a 48th place in the individual, in 1996 in Ruhpolding he was 28th in the individual and 32nd in the sprint, in 1997 he finished 60th his worst World Championship result in the sprint of Osrblie . The 1998 Winter Olympics from Nagano brought only a 66th place in the individual. The relay competition went better, with Maļuhins, Bricis and Nākums Upenieks achieved sixth place and thus his best Olympic result.

Upenieks was able to achieve an even better placement at the 1999 Biathlon World Championships from Kontiolahti as fifth in the previous year's Olympic line-up. Also in the sprint the Latvian achieved one of his best World Cup results with the 14th place, in the pursuit he fell back to the 31st place. In the individual held at Holmenkollen in Oslo , he was 51st. The World Cup individual took place there in 2000 , Upenieks was 42nd, with the relay in Lahti sixth. Before that, he won his first international medal at the 2000 Summer Biathlon World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk together with Ma gemeinsamuhins, Bricis and Nākums with relay gold. Last World Cup competitions were 2,001 of Pokljuka ranked 56 in singles and nine in the relay race. Last Olympic Games were 2002 Winter Games of Salt Lake City . The Latvian competed in singles and sprints, where he finished 71st and 65th. as well as in the relay race, where the Latvian relay was 17th. In the Olympic season , Upenieks achieved his best biathlon World Cup result as 12th of an individual in Osrblie . The Biathlon European Championships in 2002 in Kontiolahti were the end of his career . The best result was a third place with Maluhins, Bricis and Nakums in the relay competition.
