Location of the community of Ruhpolding in the district of Traunstein | ||
Ruhpolding is a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein in the Chiemgau Alps . The main town is in the Ruhpolding valley basin, which is also known as the "Miesenbacher Tal". Ruhpolding is a nationally known health and tourist resort. The name Ruhpolding is derived from the Bavarian "Rupoltingin" and means "with the people of the famous strong" (pold = strong or strong, Ru (d) = famous). According to the pronunciation of Bavarian , the place name is correctly stressed on the first syllable ( Rùhpolding ) and not on the second syllable ( Ruhpòlding ). In the local dialect, the place name is pronounced as Ruàbbàding .
geography
climate
The climate in Ruhpolding is warm and temperate. There is significant rainfall throughout the year. The annual average temperature is 7.6 ° C. About 1840 mm of precipitation falls annually.
In 2009, the Seehaus district was the wettest place in Germany according to the weather report of the German Meteorological Service, with a rainfall of 2456 millimeters (corresponds to 2456 liters / m²). The long-term average there is 2230 mm. Seehaus is five kilometers from Ruhpolding in a narrow, shady valley basin, which is why there is more traffic jam and snowfall.
Community structure
The municipality consists of 73 districts, which are distributed among the former municipalities as follows:
Original municipality of Ruhpolding (1818–1882) |
Former municipality of Vachenau (1818–1882) |
Former municipality of Zell (1818–1882) |
---|---|---|
|
|
|
The municipality part of Ramsen (former municipality of Zell) was reclassified to the eastern neighboring municipality of Inzell with effect from December 1, 1996 .
The three former or original communities existing until 1882 continue to exist as a district with a similar delimitation. Together with three uninhabited parish -free areas incorporated on January 1, 1970 , the community of Ruhpolding is divided into a total of six districts, three inhabited and three uninhabited:
- Ruhpolding (28.75 km²)
- Vachenau (14.80 km²)
- Zell (18.70 km²)
- Seehaus Forest (28.57 km²)
- Urschlauer Forst (26.28 km²)
- Zeller Forest (30.88 km²)
mountains
- Rauschberg (1645 m)
- Hörndlwand (1684 m)
- Sonntagshorn (1961 m)
- Unterberg (1450 m)
- Hochfelln (1674 m)
history
The first documented mention of today's Buchschachen district comes from the year 924. The Ruhpoldingen estate was first mentioned around 1193. Ore has been mined in the municipality since 1585. In 1882 the municipalities of Ruhpolding, Vachenau (south) and Zell (east) , founded in 1818, were merged into one political municipality. Until December 31, 1881 there were three villages in the valley of the Bavarian Traun, also called Miesenbachertal. These merged on January 1, 1882 to form the large community of Ruhpolding. Finding a name was not easy because none of the three independent municipalities of Ruhpolding, Vachenau and Zell wanted to give up their names - at that time there were three mayors and three volunteer fire brigades . Ultimately, however, an agreement was reached on Ruhpolding ; the parish church and the cemetery , the first schoolhouse built in 1821 and the post office (in the current Hotel Zur Post ) were located here. In 1895 the railway line to Traunstein was opened.
Discovered for tourism in 1933 (see section tourism ).
On January 1, 1970, three municipality-free areas were dissolved and incorporated into Ruhpolding, thus more than doubling the municipality area:
- Seehauser Forst (2854.63 ha) (southwest)
- Urschlauer Forst (2625.98 ha) (south)
- Zeller Forst (3084.38 ha) (southeast)
These areas, which were free of congregation until December 31, 1969, and the communities of Vachenau and Zell, which existed until 1882, continue to exist as districts within the community of Ruhpolding. Together with the district of Ruhpolding, which roughly corresponds to the municipality of Ruhpolding in its original boundaries before 1882, there are thus six districts.
The Ruhpolding ice rink was built in 1978. In the same year the biathlon performance center was completed. In 1979, with the first biathlon world championships , Ruhpolding became internationally known as a biathlon location.
Population development
Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 6,151 to 7,058 by 907 inhabitants or 14.8%.

coat of arms
The description of the coat of arms from 1922 reads:
- “The green Dreiberg symbolizes the three former communities of Ruhpolding, Vachenau and Zell. The golden linden tree represents the new municipality of Ruhpolding. The silver cross-river points to the Traun , which cuts through the Miesenbachertal. The silver label with the silver grit ax with gold in it alludes to the stone crosses in front of St. Valentine's Church, where it was once assumed to be a place. "

tourism
In 1933, Carl Degener (1900–1960), who ran a travel agency in Berlin, discovered Ruhpolding for tourism on a larger scale. The package tours he initiated (then in special trains) led to a real tourism boom in Ruhpolding after the Second World War . The place was one of the top travel destinations for the “little man at affordable prices” in the 50s and 60s. Therefore, the branch line from Traunstein was electrified at the end of 1955. In the mid-1950s, the number of overnight stays was 600,000. A maximum of 1,122,732 overnight stays was reached in 1991. After a decline in visitor numbers in the 2000s, the place has been on the upswing again since the 2010s due to investments and a new advertising strategy. In the spring of 2019, a controversial hotel project with 244 rooms was completed in the Zell district.
biathlon
Ruhpolding is a well-known venue for biathlon competitions. In 1979 the biathlon world championship was held in Ruhpolding for the first time. In 1985, 1996 and 2012 further biathlon world championships took place in Ruhpolding. In addition, competitions have been held in the Chiemgau-Arena , the second largest biathlon stadium in Germany, every January since 1980 as part of the IBU Biathlon World Cup , which attracts up to 66,000 spectators.
Mountain biking
For bike trails, the altitude here ranges from 600 to 1800 m. Routes, for example, lead 54 kilometers around the Chiemsee, other bike and mountain bike routes are the so-called "Bike & Hike" tour on the Zinnkopf or the Chiemgau MTB marathon route around Inzell, Ruhpolding, Reit im Winkl, Bergen, Schneizlreuth and Siegsdorf. Ruhpolding is also the starting point of the Craft BIKE Transalp, a mountain bike stage race over the Alps, which has taken place annually since 1998.
hike
Around Ruhpolding there are around 250 kilometers of hiking trails, for example the eleven kilometer circular route around the three lakes Lödensee , Mittersee and Weitsee , a nature reserve which is also known as "Little Canada" because of its wealth of lakes and the massive rock faces all around. The three lakes are among the warmest lakes in Bavaria. Other hiking routes lead to alpine pastures such as the Röthelmoosalm or to peaks such as the Sonntagshorn (1961 m) or the Hörndlwand (1684 m). Mountain railways also lead to the Rauschberg (1670 m) and the Unternberg (1425 m). The hiking trails are marked according to their level of difficulty:
- Yellow: “Easy valley paths”, wide, well-developed, also side roads with little traffic or field paths and forest paths with a slight incline, paths have a solid surface, some are paved.
- Blue: “Easy hiking trails”, well-developed mountain and alpine paths or forest roads, some with short, steeper passages or longer, moderate inclines
- Red: "Demanding hiking trails", mostly narrow mountain paths with sometimes longer, steep passages, well-developed forest roads or alpine paths that place increased demands on fitness due to their length or the difference in altitude. Sections at risk of falling are possible, which is why surefootedness and a head for heights are required.
- Black: “Alpine paths”: narrow, steep mountain paths with long, steep passages. More frequent sections in danger of falling, sometimes over longer distances. Alpine experience, surefootedness and a head for heights required. Passages with steel cables or simple climbing spots are possible.
Winter sports
The first cross-country ski trail in the Bavarian Alps was opened in Ruhpolding . Today, Ruhpolding is one of the most popular cross-country skiing regions in the world with its network of 140 kilometers of trails. There are also various practice and floodlit meadows under the Ruhpolding trails. Ruhpolding has three ski areas, on the Unternberg, on the Westernberg and in Maiergschwendt. On the Unterberg there is also a ski touring trail and a designated ski touring route. In addition, there are some snowshoe or winter hiking trails with a total length of 50 kilometers in and around Ruhpolding.
