Carl Degener (born August 24, 1900 in Bremen , † December 28, 1960 in Bremen) was a lawyer and a German travel company (including Touropa).

biography

Degener was the son of an employee at North German Lloyd in Bremen. After attending high school, he studied law and economics and received his doctorate. In 1923 he became an employee of the Bremen Chamber of Labor, which was founded in 1921 . From 1928 to 1930 he was deputy chairman and director of the employment office in Bremen.

From an early stage he was interested in the design and financing of vacation trips. Degener was obsessed with the idea of ​​making vacation travel accessible to lower-income groups. In 1930 in Berlin , the German travel saving GmbH founded and he took over the management. After this company was dissolved in 1931, he founded the travel agency Dr. Carl Degener in Berlin. The office organized vacations and trips with a focus on the Alps . Special trains drove to the Salzburger Land , preferred was the Golling . After 1933 the special trains a. a. in the Upper Bavarian Chiemgau and the number of overnight stays rose to over 200,000 in 1936. After the political and semi-state KdF, his company was the largest travel company in Germany in the 1930s.

After the Second World War , in 1945, due to a work ban, he simply began transporting wood and goods. His travel agency in Berlin was bombed out. In Ruhpolding in Bavaria he continued the travel business. In 1948 he founded a tourism company together with Hapag-Lloyd , the German Travel Agency (DER) and the Official Bavarian Travel Agency (ABR). In 1951 the tour company TOUROPA was established ; Degener was a managing partner.

The package tours initiated by Degener (then in special trains) led to a real tourism boom in Ruhpolding after the Second World War. In the mid-1950s the number of overnight stays was 600,000, three quarters of which came with the Touropa. In 1960 Degener died and was buried in Ruhpolding. In 1968 Touropa was incorporated into the major tourism group TUI .

Honors

Degener is an honorary citizen of the community of Ruhpolding .
