1974 Ferstl moved up from the C-team of the German Ski Association to the national team. On February 18, 1977 Sepp Ferstl celebrated with his second place in the downhill in Laax within the Arlberg-Kandahar , together with the in on February 6, St. Anton am Arlberg discharged slalom , in combination his first World Cup victory . At the 1978 World Cup in Garmisch, he was fourth in the downhill, then vice world champion in the combination. He won the Hahnenkamm descent on the Streif in Kitzbühel in 1978 (at the same time as Josef Walcher ) and 1979 . This should remain his only single victories in the World Cup. Besides him, only Ludwig Leitner (1965) and Thomas Dreßen (2018) won a descent on the Streif as Germans. In 1977 Sepp Ferstl became German champion in giant slalom . In his favorite discipline, the downhill, only one race was held from 1974 to 1980 and thus only a single championship title was awarded, which Sepp Ferstl won in 1976.
After a long break from injury, Ferstl announced his retirement from alpine skiing in 1981, one day before the first World Cup downhill of the year in Val-d'Isère . Today he runs a haulage company in Siegsdorf . His son Josef Ferstl is also a ski racer.
