Almost a week later he celebrated his first World Cup victory with the German team when jumping on the Rukatunturi hill in Kuusamo in the team competition. With the highest score of all jumpers, he played a big part in it. On December 9, 2012, he took third place on the normal hill of the ski jumping complex RusSki Gorki near Sochi for the first time on a World Cup podium in an individual competition. A week later, on December 16, 2012, he achieved his best individual result in the World Cup with a second place on the Gross-Titlis-Schanze in Engelberg , which he repeated in the following season in the Vogtland Arena in Klingenthal.

At the Junior World Championships 2013 in Liberec , Czech Republic , he won the bronze medal in the team competition with the German team. In the individual, he finished fifth.

On August 3, 2013, Wellinger celebrated his first individual victory at the highest competition level in the context of the Summer Grand Prix in Wisła, Poland . Two weeks later, the next victory followed in Courchevel . By winning the jumping in Klingenthal on October 3rd, he ousted Jernej Damjan from first place and won the overall ranking of the Summer Grand Prix as the third German ski jumper after Sven Hannawald (1999) and Andreas Wank (2012).

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld in 2019 , he prevailed against Stephan Leyhe in the training rounds , so that he was the fourth German to compete on the large hill in Innsbruck . Due to a disappointing 32nd place, Wellinger was not nominated for the other competitions of the World Championships.
