The 51st Nordic World Ski Championships were held from February 22 to March 5, 2017 Finnish Lahti instead.

Lahti hosted the World Championships for the seventh time after 1926 , 1938 , 1958 , 1978 , 1989 and 2001 . The jumping competitions were held at the Salpausselkä ski jump , the start and finish area of the running competitions was right next to the jump in the Lahti stadium .

Medals were awarded in 21 competitions in the three Nordic sports . In cross-country skiing there were twelve, in ski jumping five and in the Nordic combined four decisions. There were 13 competitions for men, seven for women and one as a mixed competition. The range of competitions remained unchanged compared to the last two World Championships. Almost 700 athletes from 60 nations took part in the world championships.

With a total of 18 medals, including seven gold medals, Norway was the most successful nation at this World Cup. Germany followed right behind with eleven medals, six of them gold.
The most successful athlete was the Norwegian Marit Bjørgen , who won three world titles in individual competitions and one with her relay. Her compatriot Maiken Caspersen Falla was also involved in the relay gold and won two more individual competitions. Qualification: March 1, 2017; Final: March 2, 2017, beginning at 5:30 p.m. CET

Large hill HS130

After his victory on the normal hill, Stefan Kraft became world champion on the large hill. Andreas Wellinger also won the silver medal again after his second place on the normal hill. Piotr Żyła also won the bronze medal after he moved up from a sixth place to the podium with 131 meters, the maximum distance in the competition.

Kraft and Wellinger were already 0.9 points ahead after the first run; 3rd place was Andreas Stjernen.

Severin Freund was unable to defend his title because he was unable to take part in these World Championships after suffering a cruciate ligament rupture at the end of January 2017.

In the decision, which was at a high level, the favored Polish team, which won a world championship gold medal for the first time, showed a consistently strong performance. Already after the first round, the new world champion was leading (591.9 points), followed by Austria (574.5), Germany (573.1) and Norway (564.3) were close together; the other competitors were already relatively far behind. The second round was influenced by turbulent winds, which shifted rankings from jumper to jumper and brought the second Norwegian jumper Johann André Forfang a new hill record of 138 meters, which was also decisive for the final silver medal.

Normal hill HS 100/10 km

Distance: 2.5 miles South NC ; Length: 2717 m; Elevation gain: 100 m

It was the first quadruple success for the German Ski Association and the first quadruple success for a nation since the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1934 , where four Norwegians took the first four places. The DSV participants clearly confirmed their dominance. Watabe on rank 5 was also the only one who (after 18 DSV victories in the previous 19 individual competitions in this World Cup winter) had won a World Cup competition in Sapporo (although the DSV athletes were not fully involved).

After the jumping, Frenzel was ahead of Rydzek (+14 s) and Kristjan Ilves (+24 s; final rank 23); Kircheisen was 34 s behind in 8th place, Rießle (+40 s) in 12th. The best running time brought Orter, who was 1:23 min behind in 30th place, to 8th place (+40.3 s); Rydzek was ninth in the run, Riessle twelfth; Rank 13 Kircheisen and rank 20 Frenzel.

World Champion 2015: France | François Braud , Jason Lamy ChappuisFranceFrance

Date: March 3, 2017

Large hill HS 130/2 × 7.5 km;

Course : Karpalo Sprint 1500 m ; Length: 1535 m; Elevation gain: 47 m

It was an extremely exciting competition. The gaps after the jumping were short and so the top five nations France, Germany, Japan, Norway and Austria quickly found a group with changing leaders in the following run. It stayed that way for a long time until the Austrians were the first team to tear something down in the third to last lap. However, they came back and intervened again in the battle for bronze. In the last lap Magnus Krog and Johannes Rydzek set themselves apart from the others and only shortly before the finish was Rydzek able to secure the world title for Germany with his final sprint. Akito Watabe won the bronze medal for Japan just ahead of the Austrian Wilhelm Denifl.

Trivia

  • Cross-country skier Adrián Solano attracted particular attention . The Venezuelan was arrested at the Paris airport on arrival, the French police did not believe that he was a cross-country skier. After missing his connecting flight, the 22-year-old was sent back to Venezuela. By crowdfunding Solanos new arrival was financed and so he arrived in Finland on the day of qualification. After numerous falls, he finished the race after the first lap.
  • The DSV team achieved its best result at the Nordic World Ski Championships with six gold medals. So far the results of Falun , 2015 and before 1974 by the GDR, with 5 gold medals each, have been the most successful.
  • For the first time since 1978 (back then there were only 2 bronze medals at all) Norway's men could not win a gold medal in an individual discipline.
