Tomáš Portyk (born April 6, 1996 in Jilemnice ) is a Czech Nordic combined skier who starts for the LSK Lomnice nad Popelkou club .

Career

Portyk's international career began in the Alpine Cup . There he started in September 2010 for the first time in two competitions in Liberec , in which he was 46th and 33rd. At the age of fourteen Portyk started at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2011 in Otepää , where he only competed in the sprint and finished in 50th place. In addition, he made his debut in the Continental Cup in Kranj shortly afterwards , but he did not start in the first competition and broke off the second competition before reaching the goal. A few weeks later, at the end of February 2011, Portyk achieved an initial success when he won the OPA's Nordic Ski Games school race in Baiersbronn . After further appearances in the Alpine Cup, he achieved another great success by winning the individual race at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck . At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Erzurum a few weeks later, however, it was only enough to finish 30th in the individual according to the Gundersen method and 40th place in the sprint.

In August 2012, Portyk made his debut in the Grand Prix , but initially missed the points. In his third participation, Portyk finished 24th in Oberstdorf and thus won his first seven points in the highest international summer competition series. After a break from competition of several months, Portyk started in Wisła for the first time in the Continental Cup in winter 2012/13 and won his first COC points in twentieth. A week later he made his debut in the World Cup at a competition in Chaux-Neuve , where he was 47th in the individual and 18th in the team sprint. Since then Portyk has been a regular member of the Czech World Cup team. At the Junior World Championships in 2013 in Liberec, he presented himself in strong form, but could not win any medals. He finished tenth with the team, ninth in the sprint and seventh in the Gundersen individual. In early February 2013 he was in Sochi for the first time part of the Czech relay, with which he was able to achieve fifth place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme in 2013 , he also competed in the team competition with Miroslav Dvořák , Tomáš Slavík and Pavel Churavý , but only finished tenth with more than five minutes behind the victorious French.

Portyk won his first World Cup points on December 7, 2013 at the Gundersen competition on the Lysgårdsbakken normal hill and over ten kilometers. He was able to confirm this performance in the following weeks, so that he regularly pushed into the points. Against this background, Portyk was one of the favorites at the 2014 Junior World Championships in Val di Fiemme, where he had to settle for fifth place in the sprint. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Portyk finished 25th and 32nd in the individual competitions, and in the team competition he finished seventh among nine participating nations together with Pavel Churavý, Tomáš Slavík and Miroslav Dvořák. He finished the 2013/14 World Cup season with fifty points in 40th place.

At the end of August 2014, Portyk finished sixth in Oberwiesenthal in the top ten in the Grand Prix for the first time , but was unable to confirm this result as the summer progressed. In the 2014/15 World Cup season , he was regularly among the points, with his best individual result being twelfth in Schonach at the beginning of January 2015. In his fifth participation in the Junior World Championships , he just missed the medal ranks in Almaty as fourth in the sprint. In the Gundersen singles he was tenth, with the team it was enough for eighth place. Two weeks later, Portyk took part in the 2015 Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun , where he finished eighth in both the team sprint and with the team. In the individual competitions he was 33rd on the normal hill and 30th on the large hill.

At the end of December 2015, Portyk finished tenth in Ramsau and also regularly won World Cup points in the following competitions. In February 2016 he took part in the Junior World Championships for the last time in Râşnov . At first it looked as if he would not be able to win any medals on his sixth attempt because he could not start in the Gundersen Singles. Finally, two days later, he won the sprint ahead of Terence Weber and Kristjan Ilves , making him the third Czech junior world champion in history. Together with Ondřej Pažout , Lukáš Daněk and David Zemek , he narrowly missed another medal in fourth, around thirty seconds behind Finland. He finished 26th in the overall World Cup ranking .

In mid-January he and Miroslav Dvořák achieved a surprise success in the World Cup when they finished second in the team sprint behind Norway in Val di Fiemme. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti it was only enough for the lower ranks. The summer of 2017 was much more successful for Portyk. Together with Miroslav Dvořák, he celebrated a victory in the team sprint at the Grand Prix competition in Oberwiesenthal. In the individual it was finally enough for tenth place in the overall ranking. After he found himself mostly in the middle to lower points in the winter of 2017/18 , he narrowly missed the podium in Hakuba in February 2018 in fourth place. He completed all three competitions at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . In the Gundersen singles on the normal hill he was 24th, while on the large hill he always reached 19th place. He finished seventh with the season.

At the beginning of the 2018/19 World Cup , Portyk set his best result to date and finished fourth. During the rest of the season, this placement turned out to be an exception, so that he ultimately took 36th place in the overall World Cup ranking with 86 points. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld in 2019 , he placed in the midfield, similar to the World Cup, so that he finished 33th and 28th in the individual. In the team sprint together with Jan Vytrval, he finished well behind the top in tenth place and even with the relay on the normal hill it was only enough to finish ninth. Due to these weaker performances, he entered the Continental Cup for the first time since 2013 , where he finished second on the third day of competition in Nizhny Tagil .

Private

Portyk currently lives unmarried in Lomnice nad Popelkou . In addition to his winter sports activities, he enjoys playing soccer and badminton in his free time .
