Pavel Churavý (born April 22, 1977 in Liberec ) is a Czech Nordic combined athlete .

Career

Churavý lives in his hometown Liberec and competes for the local ASS Dukla Liberec . The married sports teacher appeared for the first time in January 1999 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in a combined sprint as part of the B-World Cup and came third behind Andrea Longo and Sebastian Haseney . The following month he took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships for the first time in Ramsau and reached 28th place in the Gundersen competition, 29th in the sprint and ran with Ladislav Rygl , Milan Kučera and Petr Smejc in eighth place in the Czech relay.

On February 26, 2000, the Czech competed in Chaux-Neuve in a Gundersen race, his first race in the World Cup , in which he finished 44th. The rest of the year he competed in other races in the World Cup, but without reaching points, whereupon he was first placed back in the B World Cup in January 2001. There he was third in Val di Fiemme and won the following race in Karpacz . In February he competed in another World Cup race and won World Cup points for the first time in his hometown as 26th.

The Nordic World Ski Championships 2001 in Lahti brought the results 23 in the Gundersen competition and seventh place with the relay. In Oslo in March of that year he achieved his first World Cup result in the top 20 with rank 16, and in December 2010 he achieved his first top ten result in a Gundersen competition in tenth place. In January 2002 followed with second place in the last pre-Olympic competition in Liberec, the first place on the podium.

At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , Churavy was 16th on the long distance, 15th in the sprint and ninth with the relay. After a disappointing following season in 2002/03 , which at times led to another relegation to the B World Cup, the participation in a world championship followed . In Val di Fiemme Churavý was 34th in the Gundersen competition, 14th in the sprint and tenth in the relay competition.

A constant change between A and B World Cup followed until 2008. The Czech also achieved good World Cup results again and again, but without achieving top ten results again until 2007. In 2005 he started again at a world championship. In Oberstdorf he took 16th place in the Gundersen competition and was 35th in the sprint. He finished eighth in the season. The next highlight was the 2006 Olympic Winter Games of Turin . At the competitions of Pragelato Churavý was 21st of the Gundersen competition and 31st of the sprint race and eighth in the relay.

The 2007 World Championships in Sapporo did not bring any outstanding results with places 29 in the sprint and 23 in the Gundersen competition as well as seventh place in relay.

With the 2008/09 season the Czech was finally able to establish himself in the top of the world. He achieved seventeen placements among the top ten, including three podium finishes, from the end of November 2008 to the end of January 2010. The positive development was also evident from the results at the 2009 World Championships in Liberec, Germany. In the mass start, Churavý was twelfth, 31st in the Gundersen competition on the small hill and eighth on the large hill and eighth in the relay.

With only top 10 results and a second place in Schonach in the Black Forest , Churavý qualified for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . He finished 12th on the normal hill, in the individual on the large hill he just missed the medal ranks and ended up in fifth place. Together with Aleš Vodseďálek , Miroslav Dvořák and Tomáš Slavík , he finished eighth in the relay race.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo he did not start on the normal hill and only landed 37th on the large hill. With the team, he finished ninth in the end. In the following months, Churavý did not find his way back to the top of the world in the individual World Cups. Even with the relay, he usually only took mixed places in the midfield.

It was only in January 2013 that Churavý slowly found his way back to his old strength and again reached places among the top 20. In February 2013 he started in the Continental Cup for the first time and achieved two second places in Planica . At the following Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme, Churavý started in all competitions of the combination. After he landed on a good 12th place on the normal hill, he missed an increase in the competition on the large hill and was only 32nd. In the relay he was tenth with the Czech team. In the team sprint he reached eighth place with his partner.

In the 2013/14 season he missed the top 20 in all individual World Cups. Nevertheless, he qualified for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . In the individual competitions he reached places 23 and 32. With the relay, he finished seventh.
