The Fiemme Valley ( Fleims for short , Val di Fiemme in Italian ) is an extensive valley in the Dolomites and Fiemme Valley Alps in the northeast of Trentino in Italy . Only the municipality of Altrei on the west side of the valley does not belong to Trentino, but to South Tyrol .

The Fiemme Valley is the valley of the middle reaches of the Avisio from Predazzo to Capriana . The lower course up to the mouth of the Adige a few kilometers above Trient is called the Cembra Valley . The valley on the upper reaches of the Avisio is the Fassa valley . The various names have historical reasons: In the Middle Ages, the Fassa Valley belonged to the diocese of Brixen , the Fiemme Valley was a fiefdom of the Bishop of Trento .

Until 1963 there was a rail connection via the San-Lugano-Sattel into the Adige Valley with the Fiemme Valley Railway .

From the high slopes of the Fiemme Valley (especially at the foot of the Pala group at the former Paneveggio hospice ), musical instrument makers have long been extracting the valuable spruce wood (tonewood) for string instruments and for the soundboards of pianos .
