The Avisio at Moena

The Avisio ( German obsolete Eveys , Efeis or Laifserbach , Ladin La Veisc ) is a left tributary of the Adige in northern Italy. Over a length of 88 km, it flows through the northeast of Trentino and, on a short stretch, a section belonging to South Tyrol . The Avisio rises from a glacier of the Marmolada above the Fedaia pass ( 2057  m ). Its course leads through the Fassa Valley , the Fiemme Valley and the Cembra Valley . It flows into the Adige near Trento . On the entire route to the estuary ( 192  m ), he has conquered about 2000 meters of altitude and worked his way from the glaciated mountain world of the Dolomites into the mild climate zone of the fruit and wine-growing regions of Trentino.

Character of the river

Just below the top of the pass, the water of the Avisio is dammed up to the Fedaia reservoir ( Lago Fedaia ), which is often frozen over from the first frost until June. The Avisio emerging from the Fedaia reservoir is a torrent in the upper reaches. Over a distance of approx. 10 km, the Fassa Valley loses an altitude of over 600 m. Between Soraga and Moena at an altitude of approx. 1,200 m, the Avisio is dammed for the second time to the approx. 1 km long Lago di Pezzé . In the lower reaches the stream bed widens and branches out several times between sandbanks and pebbles.

A third barrage is located at 787 m in the Fiemme Valley to the Cembra Valley at the Stramentizzo reservoir . This lake is in the focus of local politicians and local interest groups for the repair of natural and environmental damage. Water levels that change too quickly, for which ENEL is held responsible, have triggered landslides in the past, which led to silting up of the lake, into which sewage from the entire Avisio Valley used to be discharged in an uncontrolled manner.

Landscapes on the Avisio

The Fassatal ( Val di Fassa ) is an alpine holiday region for mountaineers and winter sports enthusiasts. It is part of the Great Dolomite Road .

The Fiemme Valley ( Val di Fiemme ), which is located in somewhat lower regions and glides gently downwards , a holiday area mainly frequented in winter, is still the same valley of the Avisio river. The section from Moena only has a different (Italian) name because, in contrast to the Ladin section on the upper reaches, it was Trentino, while the Fassa Valley belonged to the diocese of Brixen .

The lower reaches of the Avisio through the orchards and vineyards of Trentino is called Valle di Cembra , named after the largest municipality in this section. It is still dominated by agriculture; porphyry is also being mined. Tourism is developing slowly; rather, it concentrates on the higher elevations of the side valleys ( altopiani ).

The last section of the river from Lavis to the mouth is a biosphere reserve, in which human intervention (digging sand from the river bed, military exercises, motocross, hunting, sheep breeding) is prohibited. The aim of the conservationists is to secure the habitat of native amphibians and rare bird species ( kingfisher , yellow wagtail , dipper ) as well as winter quarters for migratory birds. Water scarcity in the lower reaches becomes a problem for the animal world in hot summers, especially since water is taken for energy generation and irrigation of the orchards and vineyards.
