Moena ( Ladin Moéna , German outdated Moyen ) is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 2626 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) on Avisio in Trentino , Trentino-South Tyrol region . It belongs to the valley community Comun General de Fascia and to the valley community of Fleims, which has existed since the 12th century .

geography

Moena is located about 53 km north-northeast of Trento in the Val di Fassa on Avisio at 1148  m slm in a basin at the confluence of the Passo San Pellegrino 1918  m leading Val San Pellegrino . The municipality is surrounded by several Dolomite groups , in the east by the Marmolada - in the south-west by the Latemar - and in the north-west by the Rosengarten group and in the south-east by the Bocchekamm. Neighboring communities are Predazzo , Primiero San Martino di Castrozza , San Giovanni di Fassa and Soraga di Fassa as well as the South Tyrolean municipality Welschnofen and the Bellunese municipality Falcade .

Administrative division

The six fractions of Forno, Medil, Penia, San Pellegrino, Someda and Sorte belong to Moena .

Attractions

In the church of the village, consecrated to Saint San Vigilio , which has a Gothic bell tower, there are several works by the painter Valentino Rovisi (1715–1783), a pupil of Tiepolo , who came from Moena. Right next to it is the San Volfango chapel with frescoes from the 15th century and a wooden ceiling from the Baroque , a work by Moenese Giovanni Guadagnini from the 17th century.

The La Turchia festival takes place once a year . The village population, living according to Turkish tradition, celebrates an event that dates back to 1683. An Ottoman janissary was wounded during the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna and landed in Moena. He then changed the life of the village and became a hero. In the center of the village there is also a statue of this janissary who fell in love with an Italian from the village and started a family with her.

economy

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the place has changed from an agricultural character to a tourist destination , which is mainly due to the picturesque surroundings of the place and the growing number of ski slopes .

Moena is a member of the Alpine Pearls , which advocate environmentally friendly mobility in the Alpine region.

Sports

The place became famous through a cross-country ski race ( Marcialonga ) that starts there every year in January and through a very large mountain bike marathon event ( Rampilonga ) that takes place in summer .
