Hildegard Joos (born May 7, 1909 in Sieghartskirchen , Lower Austria ; † January 17, 2005 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter and an important representative of abstract painting and constructivism .

Life

Hildegard Joos spent her childhood in Lower Austria. After the Second World War she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

In 1958 she was the first woman to have a solo exhibition at the Vienna Secession , of which she was a member from 1954. From 1959 until today she had a studio together with her husband Harold Joos in Paris . She has been shaped by the Paris Salon des Réalités Nouvelles since she became a member there in 1972.

Joos was referred to as the “grande dame” of abstract painting in Austria. Chessboard and grid pictures were an important part of her artistic work. Her first works, however, were figurative, colorful and expressive.

Initially, the artist couple signed their joint works with “Hildegard Joos”, from 1980 with “H + H Joos”.

Hildegard Joos was 95 years old.

In 2014, the Viennese gallery owner and art dealer Martin Suppan organized a retrospective of the late artist Hildegard Joos in the Künstlerhaus Wien with over 140 works .
