Salon des Réalités Nouvelles is the name of an association of artists and an annual exhibition forum with trade fair character in Paris for artists of geometric abstraction and its peripheral areas.

In 2004 more than 350 artists from the fields of painting , sculpture and photography were represented at the salon. The admission of the participants takes place after submission of original works or illustrations of works by the decision of a jury.

History of the salon

Origin (1939)

Even before the Second World War and the actual establishment of the salon (1946), the art dealer and collector Frédo Sidès and the art critic Yvanohé Rambosson jointly organized an exhibition entitled Réalités Nouvelles in the Parisian gallery Charpentier (76 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré) in 1939 . On show were works by Theo van Doesburg († 1931), Kasimir Malewitsch († 1935), Jean Arp , Robert and Sonia Delaunay , Marcel Duchamp , Auguste Herbin , Otto Freundlich , Naum Gabo , Wassily Kandinsky , František Kupka , El Lissitzky , Alberto Magnelli , Piet Mondrian , Antoine Pevsner , Kurt Schwitters , Georges Vantongerloo , Francis Picabia , César Domela , Jean Gorin , Jean Hélion and Jeanne Kosnick-Kloss .

Foundation (1946) and first exhibitions

The official founding of the artists' association took place in 1946. This year, on the initiative and under the chairmanship of Fredo Sides from 19 July to 18 August the 1st Salon des Nouvelles Réalités in the Palais des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris instead, who stood under the auspices of an organizing committee, whose chairman was the museum curator Pierre-André Farcy , known under the pseudonym Andry-Farcy . Nelly Van Doesburg took over the writing, the committee members were the former gallery owner Marie Cuttoli , the director of the magazine Arts Raymond Cogniat , the actor and theater director Jean-Louis Barrault and the patron of Delaunay Paul Viard.

Works by living and deceased artists were exhibited and in this way the memory of Robert Delaunay, Theo van Doesburg, Otto Freundlich, Kandinsky, Malewitsch, Mondrian and Sophie Taeuber-Arp († 1943) was honored.

In 1946–1947, the "Salon des Réalités Nouvelles" replaced the "Abstraction-Création" association as a form for abstract tendencies in the visual arts. Fredo Sidès, who determined this development, remained chairman until his death in 1953.

The composition of the management committee for the 2nd Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, organized in 1947, included primarily artists in the organization. Herbin was appointed vice-president, Del Marle secretary, and Honoré Marius Bérard treasurer. Jean Arp , Gilbert Besançon , Sonia Delaunay , Jean Dewasne , Albert Gleizes , Jean Gorin and Antoine Pevsner were elected as board members .
