Georges Vantongerloo

Georges Vantongerloo (born November 24, 1886 in Antwerp , † October 5, 1965 in Paris ) was a Belgian painter, sculptor and architect. He is considered to be one of the most important representatives of abstract painting in Europe.

Vantongerloo turned to non-representationalism in 1917 and was, alongside the Dutch painters Piet Mondrian , Theo van Doesburg , Bart van der Leck and others, signatories of the first manifesto and co-founder of the artist group De Stijl .

In contrast to Mondrian, who demanded a strict image structure and only declared rectangles, i.e. horizontal and vertical lines, as permissible, and van Doesburg, who also included diagonals in his compositions, Vantongerloo soon deviated from this strict conception and referred to other geometric forms such as Circles, ovals and arcs. In addition to the primary colors, he also used mixed colors. With this he moved away from the puristic De Stijl artists and left the group in 1921.
