history
The gallery was founded in 1974 by the art dealer and gallery owner Martin Suppan (1943–2020). In the early years the focus was on Austrian impressionism , expressionism and interwar painting with artists such as Egon Schiele , Oskar Kokoschka , Gustav Klimt , Marie Egner , Alfred Zoff , Alfons Walde and Josef Floch . In the course of u. a. and Victor Vasarely , Herbert Bayer , Wolfgang Paalen , Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Camille Pissarro added to the gallery program.
Since 1999 the gallery has expanded its repertoire and shows representatives of post-war art, including the Viennese actionists Hermann Nitsch , Otto Muehl and Adolf Frohner or others such as Sigmar Polke , Arnulf Rainer and Antoni Tàpies , but also important representatives of geometric abstraction in Austria such as Hildegard Joos or Florentina Pakosta , and key figures of the 1960s artist group “realities” such as Franz Ringel , Robert Zeppel-Sperl or Wolfgang Herzig .
Since its founding in 1974, Suppan Fine Arts has organized almost 200 solo and group exhibitions in its galleries, with large and, in some cases, first retrospectives in Austria such as by Herbert Bayer , Hans Böhler , Hugo Puck Dachinger , Marie Egner , Josef Floch , Alfred Zoff , Hildegard Joos or Hermine Aicheneɡɡ . The gallery has arranged other exhibitions in other rooms, such as individual presentations by Marie Egner in the Austrian Cultural Institute in New York, Hugo Puck Dachinger in the Austrian Cultural Institute in London or Hildegard Joos in the Künstlerhaus in Vienna, as well as group exhibitions in institutions such as the Albertina Museum in Vienna with the Exhibition Painting - Austrian Artists Now, in which artists like Maria Lassnig , Hermann Nitsch , Jürgen Messensee , Arnulf Rainer , Martha Jungwirth , Herbert Brandl and others were ezeiɡt, or with another exhibition in the 20s house No man's dream - no mainstream.
An essential part of the gallery program is the reappraisal of forgotten artists, for example with exhibitions and publications by artists like the Austrian-American Herbert Bayer , one of the most important protagonists of the Bauhaus movement, or the Austro-British Hugo Puck Dachinger, who played a pioneering role played in exile art , Hildegard Joos , Franz Ringel and Hermine Aichenegg . Martin Suppan is usually the editor of the artist monographs, work directories and work catalogs accompanying the exhibitions. With Edition Suppan Fine Arts, the gallery acts as a publisher for these publications.
