Josef Floch

Josef Floch (born November 5, 1894 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ; died October 26, 1977 in New York ) was an American painter of Austrian origin.

Life

Josef Floch studied with Rudolf Bacher , Franz Rumpler and Hans Tichy at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1913 to 1918 . Study trips took him to Egypt and Palestine , but also to the Netherlands , where he studied the work of Rembrandt and Vermeer . From 1922 to 1938 Floch was a member of the Hagenbund and participated in its exhibitions. In 1925 (according to other information in 1926) he went to Paris , where he was henceforth successful, including in the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries . In 1934 Floch married Hermine Fränkl, with whom he had two daughters.

In 1941 the family emigrated to New York , where he was also soon successful. In 1944 he had an exhibition in the Associate American Artists Gallery and subsequently in numerous museums. In 1951 Josef Floch became an American citizen. In 1956 he received the cross of the French Legion of Honor , in 1963 he was Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres .

meaning

Floch started out as an expressionist and was influenced by Paul Cézanne and Van Gogh . He also received Hans von Marées and the old Dutch . In France , he created the quiet figure pictures typical of Floch, which radiate loneliness and melancholy of people indoors. In addition to landscapes, he mainly painted interiors and portraits . He was one of the most internationally successful visual artists from Austria, but left his home country early on.
