Rudolf Bacher (born January 20, 1862 in Vienna ; † April 16, 1945 there ) was an Austrian painter and sculptor .

Life

Bacher studied from 1882 to 1888 at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Leopold Carl Müller . In 1886 he was awarded the court prize. Bacher's early paintings were mostly devoted to religious themes. From 1894 he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus .

Bacher was one of the founding members of the Vienna Secession in 1897 and served as its president in 1904/5 and 1912–14. In 1896 he received a small gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin . Bacher contributed numerous drawings and woodcuts for Ver Sacrum magazine . From 1903 to 1933 he worked as a professor at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. In later years Bacher was primarily active as a portraitist , sculpting he preferred animal sculptures . On the occasion of his 80th birthday in 1942, Bacher received the Goethe Medal for Art and Science and the City of Vienna's Ring of Honor . In 1943 he was awarded the Waldmüller Prize . Rudolf Bacher was an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He was buried at the Sieveringen cemetery .
