history

Locations in Vienna

W&K - Wienerroither & Kohlbacher was founded in 1993 by Eberhard Kohlbacher and Alois M. Wienerroither . With the regular “Kunstheurigen”, the gallery at Währinger Straße 133, in Vienna's 9th district , developed early on into a meeting place for Austrian artists and collectors and invited people to discuss art.

In 1997 the company moved to the historic Palais Hardegg , at Strauchgasse 2, in the 1st district of Vienna . Since then, the high vaults of the palace have provided the right ambience for the presentation of selected works of classical modernism and art after 1945. To enlarge the exhibition area , the gallery space was expanded at the same location as part of the company's 10th anniversary in 2007. Since 2016, the gallery has also used a further 520 m² of exhibition space on the piano nobile of the Schönborn-Batthyány Palace, which was built between 1699 and 1706 . The building, with its three state rooms and several smaller representative rooms, forms an exciting environment for the presentation of selected artists from the period after 1945 as well as contemporary art.

In 2013 W&K - Wienerroither & Kohlbacher associated with the Shepherd Gallery, which has existed since 1966, under the name Shepherd W&K Galleries. Solo and group exhibitions are shown in the exhibition rooms on the Upper East Side, two blocks from the Metropolitan Museum. The focus is on Austrian and German artists of classical modernism. So far z. B. Presentations by Alfred Kubin and Oskar Kokoschka shown.

Art market and trade

The gallery regularly exhibits works by over 50 national and international artists, which means that it is active both in the primary market and in the secondary market of the art trade .

From the beginning, the focus of the gallery and art trade has been modern art and art after 1945 . Works by Austrian artists play an important role in the exhibition program. a. Egon Schiele , Gustav Klimt , Oskar Kokoschka , Alfred Kubin , Albin Egger-Lienz , Alfons Walde , Carl Moll , Josef Floch , Koloman Moser , Max Weiler , Max Oppenheimer and other artists from the Vienna Secession around 1900 and the Hagenbund . In addition, the gallery represents German expressionists from artist associations such as the Brücke and the Blauer Reiter , among others. a. Emil Nolde , Ernst Ludwig Kirchner , Erich Heckel , Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Otto Müller , as well as Bauhaus artists such as Lyonel Feininger and Paul Klee .

Since that year, the art dealer has also dedicated its work to selected contemporary artists, e. B. Heinz Mack , Eduard Angeli or Günther Uecker and international representatives of modernism such as Pablo Picasso , Georges Braque and Joan Miró .

Trade fair participation

W&K - Wienerroither & Kohlbacher is regularly represented at international art fairs such as the Frieze Masters in London , TEFAF Maastricht, TEFAF New York Spring, Highlights - International Art Fair Munich , Art & Antique Salzburg and the Biennale internazionale di Antiquariato di Firenze in Florence and presents selected works from their repertoire. Since it was founded, it has participated in over 100 trade fairs.

The art salon Art Salzburg was founded in 2015 together with the Beck & Eggeling , Faber, Konzett, Ruberl and Salis galleries . This art salon dispenses with booths and shows a curated overall presentation of first-class art from the 20th and 21st centuries in the Sala Terrena of the university during the Salzburg Summer Festival. In the adjoining 'Dietrichsruh' garden, a sculpture garden is also presented.

W&K - Wienerroither & Kohlbacher regularly provides loans for national and international museums , including a.
