Arotin & Serghei ( spelling AROTIN & SERGHEI ) is an artist duo consisting of Alexander Arotin (* 1970 in Vienna , Austria ) and Serghei Victor Dubin (* 1973 in Chisinau , USSR ). The two artists have been working together since 1994 and have appeared as the artist duo Arotin & Serghei since 2010.

history

Alexander Arotin grew up next to his native Vienna, in Paris and Moscow. He studied at the Musikhochschule in Vienna and at the Center Acanthes Avignon (France) with Luigi Nono , then art , stage design and film at the University of Applied Arts Vienna . Serghei Victor Dubin born in Chisinau, USSR, studied art history in Vienna, journalism in Moscow, and art history and archeology in Montpellier and Vienna. He worked in fashion, design and as a curator .

One of her main works, Infinite Screen , was commissioned by the Biennale di Venezia and the Klangforum Wien (2013/15). The art installation was further developed for Ars Electronica and the Fondation Beyeler .

As a project for the 125th anniversary of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien 2016, Infinite Screen was created by the artists in collaboration with Artcurial, Museum in Progress and Ars Electronica for a month as a 1200 m² installation on the main facade of the museum on Maria-Theresien-Platz presented with a constantly changing image and sound composition.

Parallel to these large-scale installations, which were realized as work orders, Arotin & Serghei are working on intermedial images, drawings and scores . For the artist duo, the term “intermedial” means being “media-independent” and free from fixed ties to a particular medium.

For the exhibition Metamorphosis , which was shown in 2018 in the Palais of the Galerie W&K - Wienerroither & Kohlbacher in Vienna, the duo created a new work under the name Metamorphosis 01 , as well as a six-part cycle of presentations, performances and discussions about the transformation and innovation of signs , Form and content in art and various aspects of the exhibited works of art and their sources of inspiration.

reception

“In their works, Arotin & Serghei create a universe of color and light, which is set in constant metamorphosis through overlapping, fusion and splitting. In this process of transformation, concepts from philosophy and science are taken up and condensed into image and sound compositions. The fundamental questioning of "possibilities of truth" (Ludwig Wittgenstein : Tractatus Logico Philosophicus 4.3) allows the artists to create a multitude of works of art, pictures, drawings and large-scale installations, both analog and digital unique pieces .
