The Maria Theresa Square is located in Vienna , the first district , on the ring road , across from Heldenplatz and Hofburg . It is framed by the city's two largest historical museum buildings, the former court museums, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Natural History Museum . The optical end forms the other side of the parallel to the ring two line located MuseumsQuartier . In the middle of the square is the Maria Theresa monument , the largest Habsburg monument in Vienna.

The square is one of the most popular parts of Vienna for tourism and is reserved for pedestrians. It is on the subway station MuseumsQuartier , the subway station popular theater and with the trains running on the ring tram lines 1, 2, 71, and D (stops Burgring and Dr.-Karl-Renner-ring distance).

history

Until 1857 the glacis was located here , the field of fire in front of the city wall. The Vienna Ringstrasse was built from 1858 and opened in 1865. The aim was to build the splendid boulevard of the monarchy, which demonstrated the importance of the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian Empire and its dynasty, the House of Habsburg-Lorraine .

For the area immediately in front of the imperial residence, the Hofburg , plans were made to build an imperial forum , formed from today's Heldenplatz and today's Maria-Theresien-Platz. For this purpose, two new wings of the palace were to be built in front of the historic Hofburg between the Volksgarten and Burggarten . Beyond the Ringstrasse, the two court museums were to be connected to these tracts. Arches would have connected the wings of the Hofburg with the two court museums via the Ringstrasse.

The extremely ambitious project could only be partially realized. The wing opposite today's entrance to the National Library in the New Castle was no longer built after the New Castle, the first of the two planned new wings, was not completed until 1913. The buildings that make up today's Maria-Theresien-Platz were built:

  • The Maria Theresa Monument was unveiled in 1888 .
  • The Natural History Museum was opened in 1889.
  • The Art History Museum was opened in 1891.

In the part further away from the center of the Maria-Theresien-Platz, the Museumsplatz connects as part of the double line , behind which the historical main facade of the Museum Quarter optically closes off the Maria-Theresien-Platz. This historical component was built in 1725 as an imperial court stables. In the 20th century, as on the Ringstrasse until today, electric trams also ran on the two-way line until the line was moved into a tunnel under the main carriageway in 1965/1966; The underground line U2 has been operating here since 1980 .

Triton and naiad fountain

The center of the four lawns on Maria-Theresien-Platz are the Triton and Naiad Fountains , which were created between 1887 and 1890 by Anton Schmidgruber , Hugo Haerdtl and Edmund Paul Andreas Hofmann von Aspernburg .

present

The two large museums and the city administration have given consideration to building a basement under the square in order to create space for exhibitions and / or parking spaces for tourist buses, as there is hardly any surface space available for such buses near the museums. The project, which is extremely delicate for reasons of monument protection, was not yet ready for a decision.

There is a regular Christmas market on the square in December.

In the youth jargon of the 21st century, the square was nicknamed Zwidemu ( Between the Museums ) and became one of the meeting places for Viennese youth.
