Burggarten (Vienna)
The Burggarten is a public park on Vienna's Ringstrasse .
history
The suburb in front of the Widmertor was originally located on the site, but since the 16th century it has been part of the glacis in front of the Vienna city wall . From 1637 the Augustinerschanze was located there . After the Augustinerschanze and Augustinerbastei were blown up by the French in 1809 , only the bastion was rebuilt. In 1817–1821 the Hornwerkskurtine was relocated further outside. The Kaisergarten , originally the Hofgarten , was then laid out on the newly created site behind the Augustinian Bastion . It was the emperor's private garden. It was separated from Heldenplatz by a wall and an access ramp. Like the Volksgarten, the complex was planned by Ludwig Gabriel von Remy and court gardener Franz Antoine the Elder , but with the personal assistance of Emperor Franz , who was himself a trained gardener . Particular emphasis was placed on new types of plants, which is why domestic and foreign gardeners were contacted. Here, too, there was later a redesign by Franz Antoine the Younger , albeit in the form of an English landscape garden. In 1863 the Hornwerkskurtine was demolished and the park was extended towards the Ringstrasse, whereby today's pond was also created. In 1863–1865, the enclosure was also created by Moritz Löhr . Because of the construction of the New Hofburg , the garden was reduced in size from 1881 on the north side. The wall was removed.
In 1919 the complex was open to the public and briefly renamed the Garden of the Republic and finally Burggarten . Under the terrace in front of the New Castle, underground storage facilities for the Austrian National Library were laid out in 1988–1992 .
Today it is looked after by the Federal Gardens , an office of the Ministry of Life.

building
- Palm house : Ludwig von Remy originally had two glass houses built here, these were replaced from 1900 by the today's secessionist palm house by Friedrich Ohmann . It lies parallel to the Augustinian Bastion and has a raised terrace. Today the butterfly house with tropical plants and butterflies is located in the left wing , the middle part is used by a café-restaurant.
Monuments
- Franz Stephan Monument: The lead monument by Balthasar Ferdinand Moll was created in 1781, was originally in the Paradeisgartl and was erected in the Burggarten in 1819 with a new stone plinth. It is the oldest equestrian monument in Vienna.
- Mozart monument : The monument made of Lasa marble by Viktor Tilgner has stood on Albertinaplatz since 1896 and was transferred to the park in 1953.
- Franz Joseph Memorial: In 1904 Johannes Benk created a stone statue for today's Theodor Körner command building in the 14th district . Josef Tuch (1859–1943), a student of Benk, made a bronze replica that originally stood in Wiener Neustadt's city park . During the war it was ordered to be scrapped, but it did not take place. The statue was repaired by Viktor Hammer and repositioned in the Burggarten in 1957.
- Abraham-a-Sancta-Clara monument: stone statue, created in 1928 by Hans Schwathe .
Fountain
- Hercules fountain: The figures of Hercules and the lions come from the Esterházypark in the 6th district (around 1770) and were placed in the middle of the pond in 1948.
