Hans Schwathe

Hans Schwathe , actually Johannes Schwathe (born May 28, 1870 in Strachwitzthal , Austrian Silesia , † October 27, 1950 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor and medalist .

Between 1887 and 1890 Schwathe received an apprenticeship as a stonemason specializing in marble processing at the Silesian State School for Stone Processing in Saubsdorf from Eduard Zelenka. He then studied until 1898 at the kk Kunstgewerbeschule of the kk Austrian Museum for Art and Industry in Vienna with Otto König and August Kühne. Schwathe then completed his knowledge for a year on the basis of a work grant in Italy. In 1902, through the mediation of the director of the Silesian State Museum in Opava , Edmund Wilhelm Braun, Schwathe received the tomb for Dr. Otto Zinsmeister received his first major order. Between 1902 and 1913 Schwathe gave lessons at Viennese secondary schools in addition to his artistic activity to improve his income. Schwathe lived and worked mainly in Vienna after the First World War. Towards the end of the Second World War, his Vienna studio was destroyed by an air raid.

His honorary grave is located in the Vienna Central Cemetery .
