The Esterházypark is a historically developed park in today's sixth district of Vienna , Mariahilf . It was named after the Hungarian aristocratic family Esterházy , who owned the former Palais Kaunitz here in what was then the suburb from 1814 to 1868 . The suburb was incorporated into Vienna in 1850.
description
The scale in the 18th century park with impressive chestnut avenue was after the Hungarian noble family of Esterhazy named. In the park is the fire control tower of the flak pair Stiftskaserne / Esterhazypark , built in 1944 , which has a lasting impact on the image of the park. The tower now houses the Haus des Meeres as well as a climbing wall on the outside, which is looked after by the Alpenverein Austria . There is also the civil defense bunker from the Second World War for 300 people (today the Torture Museum), which, together with the Apollo cinema and the favorable location, gives the park a special meaning.
On the enclosure wall along Gumpendorfer Strasse at the entrance there are four listed baroque stone figures that were transferred here in 1886 from the former Lazansky house on Stock im Eisen .
The park is surrounded (clockwise) by Schadekgasse , Kaunitzgasse , Gumpendorfer Straße , Blümelgasse , Amerlingstraße and Chwallagasse . The large area with the bunker and the flak tower has the address Fritz-Grünbaum-Platz 1, named after the Viennese artist Fritz Grünbaum . The traffic area of the square connects directly to the east of the park between Schadekgasse, Windmühlgasse and Gumpendorfer Straße.
