The Mozart monument in honor of the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) in Vienna has been located in the Burggarten in the 1st district of Innere Stadt since 1953 . The memorial is right at the entrance across from Eschenbachgasse and can be clearly seen from the Burgring .

The 7.5 meter high monument was created by the architect Karl König (1841-1915) and the sculptor Viktor Tilgner (1844-1896) and unveiled on April 21, 1896, five days after Tilgner's death, on Albrechtsplatz (now Albertinaplatz ) . Viktor Tilgner's signature was supplemented by the artist's date of death.

description

The sculptures are made of Lasa marble ( Vinschgau , South Tyrol), the steps of the base are made of dark diorite . The composer is depicted with a music stand on a pedestal that is decorated with ornaments, masks and wreaths and is framed by a semicircular balustrade made of coarse Sterzingen marble (South Tyrol). The moving putti figures on the pedestal, which represent the power of Mozart's music, already hint at Art Nouveau style . A relief on the front depicts two scenes from Mozart's opera Don Giovanni with The Invitation and the Appearance of the Stone Guest , while the back shows Mozart at the age of six with his father and sister, based on a drawing by Louis Carmontelle .

history

The monument fund for the erection of a Mozart monument was founded 77 years before the unveiling. But both the choice of location and the design of the monument were problematic. Such was City Hall Park , City Park and Albert Square for the site in question. The search for the right design required two artist competitions, with Viktor Tilgner's suggestion only receiving second place from the expert jury. However, the Mozart Monument Committee preferred his design to that of Edmund von Hellmer .

During the air raid on March 12, 1945 , the monument was damaged and, after its restoration, was erected on June 5, 1953 at its current location in the Burggarten. The memorial was supplemented by two pillars made of St. Margarethen sand-lime brick . In front of the monument there is a flower border in the form of a clef.

The City of Vienna donated a copy of the monument to Tokyo in 1992 .
