After graduating from high school, Hellmer began to study architecture at the Vienna Polytechnic . At the same time, he received his first artistic lessons from his uncle, the sculptor Josef Schönfeld. But already after the first semester in 1866 Hellmer switched to the Academy of Fine Arts to study sculpture. At the academy he was a. a. Student of Prof. Franz Bauer . At the same time, he sat in on Hanns Gasser's studio during this training . With his support, Hellmer was able to stay in Paris for some time .

At the age of 19 Hellmer made his debut at the International Art Exhibition in Munich in 1869 with the work The Dying Achilles . Another figure-rich relief addressed the Prometheus saga and earned him a prize. Hellmer received a generous scholarship that enabled him to spend almost two years in Italy . In Rome he completed a life-size Andromeda Shackled out of marble.

In 1870 Hellmer returned to Vienna and worked there as a freelance sculptor in the following years. In 1873 his son of the same name Edmund Hellmer was born. In 1879 he was appointed professor and from 1882 to 1892 he was also appointed lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts . Hellmer was a founding member of the Vienna Secession in 1897 . In 1901 he headed a special school for sculpture and in 1902 a systemized special school until 1922. From 1901 to 1922 he was alternately rector and vice rector of the academy. His second-born son was the cultural journalist Johann Karl Hellmer . Edmund von Hellmer was a member of the German Association of Artists .

Hellmer, who was only able to move around in a wheelchair in the last year of his life, was buried in the Perchtoldsdorf cemetery (crypt "R", number 81).

Johann Strauss Monument in Vienna (unveiled in 1921)

Hellmer's early works are completely committed to the aesthetics of historicism and also consist mainly of decoration orders for Vienna's Ringstrasse . At the turn of the 20th century, he turned to new forms, as propagated by Secessionism . He was one of the founders of the Vienna Secession .

These forms come to fruition in his most famous work, the monument to Johann Strauss Sohn in Vienna's city park . The figure Strauss himself is depicted realistically, while he is surrounded by a relief of flowing figures with intertwined hair and robes. The second major work is the monument to the liberation of the Turks, which was destroyed in 1945 and located in St. Stephen's Cathedral .

Remarks

  1. This monument is simple, clear and majestic, and thus forms a surprising contrast to the Strauss monument.
