Franz Bauer (sculptor)
Franz Bauer (* 1798 in Vienna ; † March 14, 1872 ibid) was an Austrian sculptor in the late classical tradition.
Life
From 1814 Bauer studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Johann Nepomuk Schaller and from 1815 also worked in Josef Klieber's studio . A travel grant took him to Rome, where he worked, among other things, in Bertel Thorvaldsen's studio . In 1842 he returned to Vienna and taught at the Academy of Fine Arts until his death; from 1852 as a professor at the so-called preparatory school; from 1865 he headed the general sculpture school. His most famous students were Karl Kundmann , Anton Paul Wagner , Johannes Benk , Rudolf Weyr and Victor Tilgner .
