The BBC Coburg e. V. is a basketball club from Coburg , Bavaria , whose first men's team has been playing in the 2nd basketball league ProB since 2017 . The home games are played in the HUK-Coburg arena .

history

The association was founded in October 1954. 1956, in the second season, the BBC-Coburg becomes Upper Franconian champion. At the end of the 2008/09 season, he was promoted to the Bayern League North. In 2013, the former Coburg player Manuel "Bobby" Fischer took over the position of manager. For the 2013/14 season, he was promoted to the 2nd regional league, the fifth highest German division. In 2015 they won the Bayern Cup, and in the 2015/16 season the team was promoted to the 1st Regionalliga Südost. In March 2016, the BBC Coburg Spielbetriebs GmbH was founded, and Fischer held the position of managing director. In July 2016, Matthias Haufer was hired as the sporting director, who had previously worked for the Bundesliga club Gießen , the second division club Cuxhaven and as a players agent, among others .

In the 2016/17 season, the team mathematically secured the championship on March 12, 2017. However, a hacker attack on the database, in which the reporting status of some players was changed, could have resulted in the loss of a victory. After a victory on March 25, 2017, the rise was a fact. At the end of the season, no point was deducted for the hacking attack. The master maker was trainer Simon Bertram , who worked in the junior division of Brose Bamberg before moving to Coburg .

Brose has been the main sponsor since 2016 with the Coburg-born entrepreneur Michael Stoschek , chairman of the shareholders' meeting. November 2017 there was a separation between the BBC and promotion coach Bertram, among other things because of the sporting situation. At the time of the split, Coburg was tenth in the southern season of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB with three wins and eight defeats. Derrick Taylor was installed as his successor. The Coburg team missed relegation and were relegated in mid-April 2018.

In May 2018 Ulf Schabacker was appointed as the new trainer. The BBC took over the license of the regional league champions Rockets II during the summer break of 2018 and remained in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB despite missed relegation.

In July 2018, Manuel Fischer handed over the position of managing director of BBC Coburg Spielbetriebs GmbH to Wolfgang Gremmelmaier and took over the chairmanship of the newly established supervisory board. In the 2018/19 game year, the team managed to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB as the first in the table of the southern relegation round. In September 2019 Carsten Richter became the new sporting director and thus successor to Haufer, who had switched to the Bundesliga club Bayreuth. In the 2019/2020 season, the Coburg team reached the playoffs in the 2nd ProB basketball league for the first time thanks to fifth place in the main round table, although the series against the Dresden Titans was no longer played due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After the end of the 2019/20 season, a collaboration with the Bundesliga club Bayreuth expired that, from Bayreuth's point of view, it had not proven to be sporty or logistically sensible. Instead, a cooperation was entered into with the former German champion Brose Bamberg , with whom the Coburg team also share the main sponsor, among other things to provide young Bamberg players with playing time in Coburg. At the end of May 2020, the previous assistant coach Valentino Lott was named as the new head coach, his predecessor Schabacker took over the office of sporting director and also became assistant coach alongside the American Jessica Miller. The former sports director Richter has meanwhile changed to the office of commercial director. In addition to the cooperation with Bundesliga club Bamberg, an agreement was also reached with the Regnitztal Baskets club in August 2020, which included the use of Coburg young players in Regnitztal's U16 Bundesliga team and in the men's area to give Coburg players the opportunity to simultaneously use a double license in Regnitztal in the regional league to run up.

Club structure

With 268 members, the club is ranked 78th among the largest German basketball clubs (as of December 31, 2016).

In addition to the first men's team, there are three other men's teams. The club currently has a women's team. In the youth sector, the BBC Coburg provides a total of eleven teams in the age groups from U8 to U20. In the years U8, U10 and U12 the club cooperates with Junior Franken e. V.
