The OrangeAcademy (formerly BG Illertal and Weißenhorn Youngstars among others ) is a basketball team from Ulm . She currently plays (as of the 2018/19 season) in the third-class 2nd basketball Bundesliga ProB and serves as a youth development team for the first division club Ratiopharm Ulm .

history

After it was founded in 1994, the basketball team played in the county league for the first time . After six promotions under different names (FV Weißenhorn, BC Groer Recycling Weißenhorn) and with many different cadres and coaches , the team as BC Scholz Recycling Weißenhorn made it into the ProB in the play-offs against wiha Panthers in the 2009/10 season Schwenningen . The team was spared relegation for a long time, even if it was almost so far in the 2011/12 season and they only managed to stay in the ProB relegation round.

In 2010 the team merged with the basketball divisions of the TV Senden / Ay, SpVgg Au and SC Vöhringen clubs and founded BG Illertal. In the same year, the BGI agreed a cooperation with Basketball Ulm, the operator of the Bundesliga club Ratiopharm Ulm .

During the summer break of 2012, the name of the men's team was changed to Weißenhorn Youngstars and affiliated to the Basketball Ulm GmbH as a youth development team. The remaining club teams were still led by the BG Illertal. Since a first division team is not allowed to own a ProB team, TAB Sportmarketing GmbH with managing director Björn Elsner was founded to implement the “Youngstars” project. In addition, the Ulm team deployed Artur Kolodziejski as the sports director of the Weißenhorns to pave the way together and to strengthen cooperation. The young stars started the 2012/13 season with a completely restructured and very young squad and made it into the ProB play-offs with third place . In the semifinals, the game ended against Bayer Giants Leverkusen . The British Tim Lewis, who had led the young stars through this season, left the team in May 2013 to take a "new step" in his career. The newcomer was Zoltan Nagy, who had already worn the jersey of the Hungarian national team 85 times . After the 2013/14 season, Nagy was replaced as coach by the Finn Daniel "Danny" Jansson .

Jansson led the team to the final of the ProB in the 2016/17 season and thus to promotion to the ProA. Weissenhorn lost the first leg of the final against PS Karlsruhe 67:71, but turned the tables in the second clash and won the championship with a 77:71 away win. A few days before winning the title, the decision was made to make the move. Since the Weißenhorn hall did not meet the minimum requirements of the ProA, the operating company Basketball Ulm GmbH arranged for the team to move to the Ulm Kuhberghalle. At the end of June the team was renamed the OrangeAcademy, the previous name Weißenhorn Youngstars disappeared. The Ulm team was the youngest team in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA in the 2017/18 season and missed out on being promoted.

In the 2018/19 season, coach Jansson led the team to the second round of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB, where they lost to SSV Lokomotive Bernau .
