The SSV Lokomotive Bernau is a basketball club in the third highest basketball league in Germany ( 2nd Bundesliga ProB ).

The home games are played in the Erich-Wünsch-Halle on Heinersdorfer Straße in Bernau .

history

The beginnings of Bernau basketball go back to the end of the 1950s, when, on the initiative of Erich Wünsch, basketball was initially offered under the umbrella of BSG Empor Bernau, then at TSG Einheit Bernau and later at the company sports association Lokomotive Bernau. This resulted in the SSV Lokomotive Bernau eV After Wünsch, the "father of basketball in Bernau" who died in 2014, the sports hall in Heinersdorfer Strasse was named in June 2015.

The 1st men's team of SSV Lok Bernau operated from 2001 to 2003 initially as "Bernau RimRockers", then until 2007 under the name "Barnim RimRockers". After being promoted to the 1st regional league, the RimRockers separated as a competitive sports department from the parent club. After establishing yourself in the midfield of the league in the first year after promotion (5th place), in the following season (2003) you made it to the second highest league in Germany (2nd Basketball Bundesliga North), rose in the 2003/04 season but straight back to the 1st regional league. Rainer Jeschonek in particular shaped this time as a manager before he stepped down from his position in 2007. From 2007 the basketball players appeared again as SSV Lok Bernau in the 1. Regionalliga Nord. In the summer of 2007, coach Torsten Schierenbeck brought the American Jason Boone to Bernau, who turned out to be a great win in terms of sport and humanity and was lured away by Bundesliga club BG Göttingen during the 2007/08 season . In the 2009/2010 season, the club managed under Schierenbeck promotion to the now third-class 2nd basketball Bundesliga Pro B North. In 2012 he was relegated to the 1st regional league.

The 2015/16 season was completed by the men's team in the 1st Regionalliga Nord without defeat and, under the leadership of coach René Schilling, they became champions, so they were promoted back to the ProB. The decisive man on the field was the American Pierre Bland , who was named the best player in the Regionalliga Nord in the 2015/16 season by eurobasket.com and who remained loyal to the club even after promotion. In June 2016, the club entered into a cooperation with the Bundesliga club Alba Berlin , so that talents of the Berliners in Bernau's ProB team could receive working time by means of a double license.

The main round of the 2016/17 ProB season ended as a newcomer to the league in the first place in the standings of the northern season, before the Brandenburg team overtook VfL Bochum (0-2 wins) in the quarter-finals of the championship round . In the 2017/18 game year, the railroaders were eliminated in the first playoff round (0-2 wins against Iserlohn). The young Bernauer team, studded with young talent trained at Alba Berlin, advanced to the ProB semifinals in the 2018/19 season and lost to Leverkusen there.

concept

The long-term goal of SSV Lok Bernau is to bring youth players from all over Brandenburg to the level of the regional and Bundesliga and to promote them in a targeted manner. The youngsters gain first experience at the highest level in their own federal state through the youth, women and men teams. In addition, the majority of the ProB team is made up of double licensed players from the cooperation with Alba Berlin (2018/19 season: seven players in the permanent team) who have the chance in the suburbs to recommend themselves for higher tasks. SSV Lok Bernau is one of the most successful basketball clubs in the state of Brandenburg. In the 2018/19 season, 24 teams are registered in play. There is also a ball school and a parent-child group.
