The Basketball Löwen Erfurt are a basketball team from Erfurt . The operator of the team is XXL Baskets GmbH.

history

After the Bundesliga relegation in 2018, the Rockets team playing in Erfurt withdrew from the professional field. Marc Reimschüssel (board member at BC Erfurt), Michael Bätz and Christian Staufenbiel as well as Wolfgang Heyder and Florian Gut , who previously worked for the Rockets , then founded XXL Baskets GmbH to keep professional basketball in the city of Erfurt. Well took over the coaching office. At the conference of the 2nd Bundesliga basketball league in June 2018, XXL Baskets GmbH was granted the right to participate in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB for the 2018/19 season after those responsible in Erfurt had previously reached an agreement with the Artland Dragons on a transfer of participation rights, which in turn had taken over the license of the Rockets in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA .

In June 2018 the working title XXL Baskets Erfurt was changed to the team name Basketball Löwen Erfurt. A large part of the team that had won the championship title in the 1. Regionalliga Südost with the Rockets II under coach Gut joined the Lions, David Taylor joined the former Bundesliga squad . In their premiere game year 2018/19 , the Lions reached the ProB playoff round of 16 as eighth of the table in the southern season and were eliminated there against the WWU Baskets Münster , the first in the northern season. The 2019/20 season, which ended prematurely in mid-March 2020 due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus , ended the team with three wins and 19 defeats as bottom of the ProB southern season. On the part of the league, however, it was decided that there would be no relegation due to the shortened season.

In August 2020, the former Latvian international Uvis Helmanis was hired as the new coach. Predecessor Gut remained sports director.
