Ernst Wolner

Ernst Wolner (born December 29, 1939 in Vienna ) is an Austrian heart surgeon .

Life

Ernst Wolner studied medicine at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1963 . This was followed by training to become a specialist in surgery . From 1968 he was head of the working group Assisted Circulation - Artificial Heart at the II. Surgical University Clinic in Vienna. In 1973 he completed his habilitation, in 1981 he was appointed full professor of surgery and head of the II. Surgical University Clinic in Vienna, which he headed until 1993. From 1994 until his retirement in 2008 he was head of the cardiothoracic surgery department at the University Clinic for Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna at the General Hospital of the City of Vienna (AKH).

From 1982 he was head of the Ludwig Bolzmann Institute for cardiac surgery research. In March 1984, together with Axel Laczkovics and Hermann Kassal, he performed the first heart transplant in Vienna. Previously, in October 1983 at the University Hospital Innsbruck by Raimund Margreiter and Franz Gschnitzer the first heart transplant performed in Austria. In 1986 he implanted an artificial heart to bridge the gap until a real heart was transplanted. His other scientific achievements include the description of the world's first application of fibrin glue in cardiac surgery and the first clinical application of the intra-aortic balloon pump in Europe .

From 1996 to 2004 he was President of the Supreme Sanitary Council , of which he was a member from 1989 to 2014. From 1996 to 2008 he was also deputy chairman of the Vienna State Medical Council and from 2010 to 2014 a member of the bioethics commission at the Federal Chancellery . From 1997 he was President of the Austrian Tennis Association (ÖTV), Ronnie Leitgeb succeeded him in this position in 2012 . In October 2012 he was elected President of the Rudolfiner Association. Ernst Wolner is the author and co-author of more than 600 publications. He is the father of five children and played tennis in the national basketball league from 1957 to 1970 .
