Dr. Karl Renner Prize

The Dr. Karl Renner Prize was donated by the City of Vienna on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the birthday of Federal President Karl Renner . This award is given every three years to people or groups of people who have made outstanding contributions to Vienna and Austria in cultural, social and economic matters and are thus recognized on a national or international level. The prizes, endowed with 43,600 euros, are awarded to a maximum of six nominations.

  • Amalie (Mela) Hofmann (head of the infant home of the Central Crèche Association at Lainzer Straße 172)
  • Rudolf Keck (introduced a more economical method of gas generation in the Simmering gas works)
  • Hans Radl (as a war-disabled teacher founded a school for physically handicapped children in Kauergasse in 1926, in 1951 appointed by UNESCO as an international expert on the teaching and upbringing of physically handicapped children)

  • Franz Salmhofer (composer and opera director)
  • Ilse Arlt (founder of the first school for welfare workers under the name United Specialized Courses for People Care )
  • Karl Mühl (specialist in welfare for the deaf and dumb, teacher at schools for the deaf and dumb, looked after soldiers with hearing problems during World War II, rebuilt the institute for the deaf and dumb in Vienna-Speising)
  • Gustav Reinsperger (became an American prisoner of war in 1945, was extradited to Russia, initially performed auxiliary services and managed hospitals in various prisoner of war camps from 1950 to 1953)

  • Franz Lagler (as a gas station attendant prevented an explosion in Vienna)

  • Walther or Walter Peinsipp (Austrian diplomat in Hungary; organized aid convoys during the Hungarian popular uprising )
  • Kaprun workers (everyone involved in the construction of the Kaprun power plant )

  • Friedrich Weinhofer (locksmith and welder, prevented an explosion in the Malfattigasse heating workshop in 1951, prevented an explosion a second time in 1958. He suffered severe burns in the process.)
  • Georg Piller and Gottfried Reisinger (The chauffeur Piller and the mechanic Reisinger helped arrest a suspected murderer and were seriously injured by gunshots.)
