Herbert Trenkler (born December 28, 1907 in Königshof (Bohemia) , † June 20, 1992 in Leoben ) was an Austrian engineer and mining scientist.

Trenkler studied physics at the Technical University of Munich from 1926 . In 1926 he became active in the Corps Suevia Munich . Since he wanted to turn to metallurgy , he switched to the Montanistische Hochschule Leoben in 1927 after the reception . There he immediately became a two-band man in the Corps Montania. In three semesters he distinguished himself as a senior . After graduating, he became an assistant at the Leoben Institute for Metallurgy, where he wrote his doctoral thesis . To the Dr. Ing. , From 1933 he was a steelworks assistant at Dillinger Hütte and Gutehoffnungshütte in Oberhausen. In 1940 he came to the steelworks in Hagondange as director . From 1944 he headed the Reichswerke Hermann Göring in Watenstedt (Salzgitter) . In the post-war period in Austria he took over the management of a VÖEST steel mill in 1946 . Since 1947, director of the works, he played a key role in the development of the Linz-Donawitz process . The Montanuniversität Leoben appointed him to the chair of iron and steel engineering in 1958 . In 1962/63 and 1963/64 he was rector of the Montanist University. Until his retirement in 1977 he was also the head of the institute. From 1958 to 1978 he was a board member and chairman of the Austrian Ironworks Association . Trenkler died on June 20, 1992 at the age of 84 in Leoben and was buried at the central cemetery in Leoben ; his wife Leonie (1910–1995) died three years later and was buried at his side.
